Agree in part that basketball, especially the tournament renegotiation could be huge. Regular season basketball just doesn’t have the ratings numbers at this point. Breaking into football requires years of planning and resources, basketball is much easier to make an immediate impact in the form of NIL or transfers.I think the most important snippet in there that is probably lost is the comment that TV execs put the media value of a conference at 70/30 - 80/20 football: basketball.
This is why I keep arguing with people saying "basketball doesn't matter." You can bet that the Big 12, ACC and PAC or on the basketball heavy side of that equation already, and why the things like Gonzaga might make sense. It also raises the urgency to get Arizona in my opinion.
I think the share of media value from basketball is going to continue to rise. Let's keep in mind the demographic that took part in the great decline in football participation is just at the beginning of being household media decision-makers. Meanwhile, a huge percentage of kids play basketball. I think that matters a lot. The other headwind facing college football vs. basketball is NIL and general financial disparity. Both because of the number of players needed and the format of the tournament there are going to be tons of teams that remain relevant.
If I'm playing the 10+ year long game, particularly somewhere other than the SEC, I'm betting heavily on basketball.
