They were joking about it for the season because the big ten cancelled the season and they thought they had a title contending team. There was nothing actually serious about it. Then again OSU is much closer to an SEC team then it is a big ten team so who knows.

Not sure it was a joke, but he admitted it wasn't all that serious. From LINK:

Smith admits that during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he considered leaving the Big Ten and having Ohio State go independent. And to counteract the millions that likely would have been lost, he also considered OSU getting its own TV rights deal.

“That was the only time that I talked to the boss about ‘maybe we just go independent,'” Smith said, via Cleveland.com. “Emotions were driving me more than my rational thinking.”

Although Smith and Ohio State president Kristina M. Johnson had discussed the move, Smith says the thought was fleeting. It lasted mere “seconds” after his wife, Sheila, talked him down.

Meh, I don't know. I think both are relative to each other.

You are not going to have a fanbase that fills a 100K seat stadium regularly that doesnt also regularly watch on TV.

A school that regularly fills a stadium, regularly travels well. Is a sign of a passionate fan base. This is a sign for how much value that school is worth. It directly correlates to how much that fanbase will watch on TV as well.

If you have a game between a team that regularly has a full stadium, and a team that regularly has an empty one, and there are 1M viewers, you can argue that a higher percentage of those viewers were from the school that regularly fills the stadium.

I will say, a team having a full stadium, is probably not a major factor, but it is a relative factor to other major factors, and gives a overall picture of a schools fanbase.

Attendance is a decent proxy for "interest", at least among that schools fan base.

That correlated to overall viewership a little, but to potential streaming interest more.

That is what I have been saying all along, the money is great, but EIU already had 50 million more to spend each year than ISU, is another 25 or more really going to be that much of a game changer?
How many more times can they remodel their fields, more money will go into the secondary sports, but even there, few care, and what does it get them. Hey, EIU built a new baseball field, how does that effect ISU when we do not have a team? It doesn't.

Unless these schools can find a way to either start giving out more scholarships, going from say 85 to 100, or start spending that money on NIL, which then makes the players employees, I do not think it's going to be that big of a difference maker, for the Big 12 schools as long as we continue to make 45 to 55 million from TV.

I always had the impression it wasn't a threat per se, just that he was trying to show everyone publicly just how unhappy they were about it.

His audience was B1G decision makers, to influence them, but also Buckeye fans to show them "hey we want to play so keep loving us".

Why I find it kind of insulting is while I respect Oregon St. and Wash St., it's fair to say their own fans don't give nearly as much of a crap as ISU fans do. Many, many, many more fans go to our games in the stadium. That's not really debatable.

Yeah agreed, respect Washington State and Oregon State, but this was the latest chart I saw from the NCAA:

Looks like we were 21 nationally in attendance? The only Pac-12 team ahead of us I think is Washington.

I remember Gene Chizik was blown away when we were like 2-7 and sold out the stadium lol

I'd assume we're going to see a pretty obscene hike in coaching salaries when the new money starts rolling in, that's where there could be a big difference.

National Sports *journalism* is anything but…they are all pushing opinion and/or a narrative for another stakeholder. It’s gotten so lazy that it is embarrassing; they make it worse with their public attitudes.

I get the point but it really doesn't correlate at all. Last year ND who everyone is bending over backwards to try to add barely got over 100K viewers for their week 2 match against Toledo that was a 3 point game. Doesn't matter that they had great attendance for the game what matters is ratings and since the game was placed on peacock against a MAC team no one watched it. Same thing happened the same week for bama, almost as many fans in attendance as viewers.

Attendance is about how great an in game experience there is which for several big ten schools is awful. But even when Michigan is giving away tickets if you buy a pepsi their ratings are still amazing. That is what matters.

You know what I find interesting in that link, last year. Yes part of covid year.

We took in more or equal on every aspect on that list except Media and licensing.

We had more, donations, ticket sales, Conf Distributions, and were equal on NCAA distribution, Misc.

But in turn we dwarfed their expenses. As usual Iowa couldnt pay their bill.

I wonder how accurate this is. Because it says they Iowa only had 189K in ticket sales, and we had 2.6M.

Oregon doesnt have a medical nor an Engineering school, and has 1/5 the research funding we have, but can maintain AAU status.....

I think the main point is that I'm pretty sure we pull our weight in TV ratings, and evidently we're top-25 in attendance nationally. We have the 3rd biggest stadium in the Big 12 behind Texas and OU.

So it's odd then out of all the Big 12 teams, we get the comparison to Oregon State or Washington State. These are teams averaging 20-30k in home attendance.

There's definitely a disconnect between the reality and perception of Iowa State.

That's 2020-21. Covid season. The year before they report 25 mil in ticket sales and we had 18.

We had more ticket sales in 2020 because we did partial attendance.

I believe we are in the Top 10 for percentage of capacity, its like the top 5 are all at 100% capacity, then someone then we sit at like 7th at about 98.7%capacity.
