How real do we think the potential of ACC poaching PAC schools is? Or even a full merger?
The former has to worry some of the mountain schools. Maybe the ACC takes 8, but maybe just 6. In the full merger case, might as well threaten to sell ourselves to ESPN in their efforts to build out ACC. Big 12 dissolution gives ESPN out for free, which means only the top 4-6 of the PAC would get an ACC invite.
This is the only chance schools not in the top half of the PAC can dictate their future. If they pass on helping to start unraveling the Pac10, there are many ways in which they are worse off, if not left out. Get 3 to join the Big 12, and you get the top. The UW/Oregon/Stanford trio may prefer ACC, and Utah/Cal would follow, but when some of those leave for BIG, along with some ACC for SEC, they'll be orphans in a rather weak conference. I don’t see any conference fully absorbing the PAC. On the high end, it’d be at most 7 schools if Stanford can bring itself to slum with the likes of the Big XII and ACC.
The ACC and XII are similarly positioned to be the #3 conference, with maybe a slight geographical edge to the XII having 10/12 schools closer to the PAC schools. As things stand, the ACC and XII will probably run neck and neck in per school distributions through the end of the ACCs GOR. But if either fully absorbed the PAC, the current members would take a $10m per year hit. That would put the absorbing conference behind the one that didn’t take the PAC in the only metric that matters - money. It would also be in a position to be raided by the conference that didn’t take the PAC.
The goals for the ACC and XII are similar: kill the PAC without diluting their media money pool. I think WA and OR are the two prizes that could increase the $$ in either conference, and 3-5 that could earn their keep in either conference.
I don’t see how the PAC sticks together making $15-$20m less that the XII and the ACC when plenty of members could bolt and get that for themselves. If deciding between the ACC and the XII, the PAC schools will likely consider that the ACC hasn’t really been raided by the SEC and Big 10 yet. It’s not going to happen for a bit, but will the rump ACC keep up with the XII or will they find themselves in a decimated conferencep yet again?

I think you take the Arizona schools and wait to see who contacts you next, hoping it's Oregon and Washington. If not, then Colorado and Utah are the ones you're after.
We'd be stupid to take Washington st and Oregon st.
They'd be great culture fits, but yeah, not great financially
I think full merger would be due to how the Big 12 has revered course. Banding together.
But given they have at least 4 schools thinking they have P2 chance, 5 if you count Utah, and are coming up on their deal, so it will be harder for them.
We should be thankful OUT was leaked. They were OUT either way, so finding out early good.
Granted, if those two were actually blueblood, elite programs, and thought they were the Bama of the Big 12, the Big 12 would have added UW, Oregon, etc by July 5th, and moved on to seeing if we could work with the SEC to divide up the ACC
For selfish reasons I would love SDSU in the Big 12. Unfortunately we have have a ton of transplants who bring their existing sports allegiances with them and resist supporting the local teams. It drives me crazy that I see so much gear from East coast teams around town. I would instantly buy season tickets (probably to both SDSU and ASU if either/both were added) but I’m skeptical that the larger community would buy in.
Cal is bad on both accounts, but they are the wingman to some attractive schools.
What if oregon st was the price to get oregon, ie they were a pair only. And both signed a strong GoR?
Not advocating for or against, but i think there could be scenarios where it makes sense. Not a lot, but a few.
I still think you try to take 4 to 6 now, then 4 to 6 from ACC whenever that implodes, and have 24 teams in a nice cross country conference/league.

Leftovers are not in position to confuse brand name school with a football brand that adds value. The BIG can afford to do that.
I think you still say no. A situation like that hasn’t happened yet. But it’s also a stand-off situation trying to get the other side to blink. We have no reason to blink.
My unified theory for P2 realignment as it sits right now:
There are 6 programs left that add value to the B1G or SEC: Notre Dame, UVA, UNC, Clemson, FSU, Miami, with Miami being the least of these.
That leads to 2 probable scenarios for realignment:
Scenario 1: SEC chaos
Notre Dame, UVA, UNC -> B1G
Clemson, FSU, Miami -> SEC
The rumored 4th candidate here for the B1G is Stanford. Builds out west coast, rival for Notre Dame, fantastic academics.
The chaos is the SEC has no obvious 4th candidate. One lucky, undeserving school gets a free ticket to P2. Who will it be? Your guess is better than mine.
Scenario 2: B1G chaos
UVA, UNC, Clemson, FSU -> SEC
In this scenario Notre Dame is still an obvious take for the B1G, but is Miami? They're on an island, and borderline for adding enough value to begin with. Maybe the B1G adds Stanford, UO, and UW instead.
There are other possibilities of course, but I see these two as the most likely.
