B1G wants Virginia and UNC. No question. Oregon is decent. But Phil Knight is 84. His money only benefits Oregon. It isn’t shared. B1G got USC and UCLA. PAC 12 destroyed. B1G more powerful than SEC. Now cut the head off the ACC. B1G will get first pick. SEC will get their choice. Big 12 #3.

Thamel usually has good B12 connections

But maybe it was Bob
The article reinforces my thoughts: It takes time for the Pac to realize what the Big12 already knows, they aren't getting more elsewhere. Unless they decide to stick together because it isn't about money to them, I fully believe the corner schools will eventually move over to the good guys. Sounds like the Big12 is running numbers to show them why we're the better choice... we have years of experience doing that!

Not seeing how Okie St would make a move that could weaken their recruiting in Texas.
I’ve read the targets would be KU, Ok St, TCU, Houston, so It wouldn’t hurt it that much.. But there are some top schools that want the sec. that’s not changing, and would be a risk for those that left.

It’s the same situation as this past year with Pac12 . If the Big 12 sticks together, it can make schools come to them, and they are base of 3rd conference and the other two cease to exist.

The ACC with top schools remaining and espn backing reeks of a ruse. A few years in and ESPN executes some clause that moves top to SEC, and at that point there’s nothing the B12 schools can do. They’re now in the same P3 as what B12 wants, except they play BC instead of Iowa St

I think it confirms what we already know- that ESPN is in scramble mode over FOX threatening to stop espn plans to gut Pac12 and Big 12 and add those schools as an appeasement to ACC when moving top ACC schools to SEC

Seems like they got caught off guard and weren’t originally going to bid on leftover Pac10, if bid on Pac12 at all.

They’re desperately trying to figure out a way to protect market share on possible P3, which they’ve decided doesn’t include much of the Big 12, and keep the hatches locked down on the top ACC assets, which also helps keep ND from going BIG.

Without espn already having its desired path to P3 plotted and trying to dictate who survives, the natural way would be consolidation into Big 12. This FOX aspect hopefully saves the Big 12 imo. If they’re willing to combat espn, which they should have interest in preventing ESPN from getting “3rd” conference, maybe ESPN bails on making ACC as base

Highlights from the Thamel piece:

The Pac-12/ACC "loose partnership" is expected to get revenue projections from ESPN early next week. People don't think it will be much of a bump because ESPN would not be able to charge the higher in-market rates for ACC Network in Pac-12 markets, since it's not a full merger.

The Pac-12 has convinced the corner schools to wait and see on those numbers before doing anything. If they are unimpressive, they could heat up with the Big 12. Thamel said the conversations between those schools and the Big 12 weren't as hot as had been reported.

Thamel also floats the ACC going on offense to poach schools from the Pac-12 and Big 12 (he mentions TCU and Oklahoma State). Feels unlikely to me but if the ACC keeps its top brands that would be the most $$$ place to be. Nobody knows anything.

Just hope the Pac-12/ACC $$$ figure is bad and then the corner schools might be ready to make a deal for real next week.
It's been reported that the P12 Network is a money loser and that ESPN loses money on the ACC Network. Now the B10 has taken away their biggest market between the two networks. How in the world could a merger of the two networks be successful unless ESPN wants to throw them a lifeline and is willing to lose money in the process. There can't be that many synergies in terms of overhead costs getting reduced. You would still have 100% of the TV production costs. And the teams themselves would incur a huge increase in travel costs.

So the ball is clearly in ESPN's hands here. Hopefully we find out soon that this isn't going anywhere.

Good piece from a legitimate reporter about evaluating the quality of information circulating in chaotic times like these. Lots of people love to talk to reporters (or randos on Twitter), but very few who actually know what's going on.

I am sceptical of the ACC doing anything that could potentially reopen contract negotiations with ESPN. Doing so might weaken the strength of the GOR in court, and would give the B1G an opening to talk with UNC/Duke/UVA/GT.

You mean a guy who is trying to protect his paycheck.

Brown works hard but his frequent crying about this is old. We wouldn’t pay close attention and he wouldn’t have a job if we just wanted to read what 100% would occur. We’d just read about it after the fact.

Remember that USC rumor?

It all depends on what you’re shopping for as a reader. A lot of stuff that is happening but can’t be “reported” is what people want, especially those that follow this closely. You’re going to need to go to the smut aisle for that

A poor analogy is going exclusively investment grade isn’t what everyone wants, and is passing up return. Some are all about the junk bonds.

I like that both the CU athletic director and the University Chancellor have first hand experience with the Big 12 Conference. That familiarity will come in handy if they see the PAC estimates. Education is very important to that university, but the athletic director knows the value of a dollar and what he wants to do down the road. I will be surprised if they stay in the PAC and make less money than they could in the Big 12. Time will tell.

You want to mainline the National Enquirer all day, by all means be my guest. Some of us want a realistic take on the situation rather than whatever some idiot tweets out hoping to drive up his follower count.

All these tweets, rumors, etc. and yet, nothing concrete has really been reported that I've seen.

Just maybe it will be the CF premium deal where we'll just find out eventually.

CW retweeted the SwimSwam guy who reported yesterday about all the ACC schools negotiating their move to the SEC. He justified it on the grounds that the SwimSwam guy is Twitter verified. Ultimately, he deleted the whole thing.

I take that as something of a proxy for what the people "in the know" really know.
