I’m not speaking strictly to recent results. I’m talking about things like fan engagement. Currently there are much more people interested in attending and watching Iowa State football - which is the major factor in driving value for realignment. Today, Cal and Iowa State aren’t particularly close.
Cals numbers are horrendous since 2010 though. 4 NCAA tournament trips but only 1 as a single digit seed in which they were upset by a 13. 0 2nd weekend appearances.
Football has 4 bowl bids, went 2-2 there, and the best one is the Holiday bowl

I believe that's a far too narrow focus. There's much more than simple won-loss records. What are the facilities and other resources? fan base? alumni numbers? level of commitment to the athletic program? academics? As far as that goes, when was our last conference championship?
Thanks for mentioning that, we have family documents from my 9th Great Grandfather (a lot of last childs I'm a descendent of) that talks about him loaning William Brewster 10 cents to go on the trip. He was supposed to mail it back to him but Willy stiffed him. We have been looking for someone to pay that back. Quick calculation of 10 cents at 8% interest (to be fair and not charge the 21% credit card fee) over 400 years, would be 2.5 Trillion dollars. That seems steep, we will settle for 1 Trillion if you can pay it in the next 30 days.

20 years is my go-to window for such things. It certainly isn’t perfect, but it isn’t entirely arbitrary or meant to make a program look accomplished.
Typically you get a coaching change (or two). It is often enough time to soften the effects of a particularly good (or bad) recruiting class (or two).
The Nebraska comparison is off for a host of reasons. The most obvious is that until last week there weren’t any structural changes affecting Cal that landed in that window. They’ve had the same advantages/disadvantages as always.
I couldn’t disagree more on your statement that “What matters is where things stand today” in the sense you seem to mean it. It is an important factor in predicting results on a horizon of maybe 3-4 years for football and 1-2 for basketball. Hopefully it is self-evidently a near non-factor in the bigger picture of evaluating the value of a school’s athletic department.
Well, I certainly hope (game) attendance is a factor in valuation. I think its value as a proxy for fan engagement varies by region.

As much as I dont like Lousiville, especially their basketball, i think they're a take if you can get them. They're a significantly better fit than NC State, who feels extremely Rutgers/Maryland. While some might not really care about that i think there's a real shot for the Big 12 to end up as both the clear number 3 but also the fun conference.
People have real SEC fatigue and it'll still likely be a Bama and Georgia buttfuck conference. And the Big 10 is largly gonna be this overly sanitized who gives a **** conferences where 90% of the games are boring slogs between teams who mean nothing to each other or have a ton of 1 sided rivalries.
Cal basically only has academics. Bad win loss record, fanbase isnt known as partially good, no commitment to their athletics given the location they're in and the results they get. Idk about the rest but good facilities aren't gonna push them to a take
