UNIs AD believes that only FB, MBB, WBB, VB, SB, BSB stay as true varsity sports. Everything else becomes some level of club ball with a small budget and no scholarships.

Hockey and wrestling have a shot as well at the limited schools that play those sports.
The Title IX implications are going to be interesting. I guess the House settlement established a formula for athlete back pay that is roughly 90% for football and men’s basketball and then 10% for women. From what I’ve read, the initial plan at most schools is to use that same formula for future spending on athletes as well.

But I can just imagine the outrage and lawsuits that will eventually come from that. The WNBA is about to have lockouts demanding more pay even though the league loses $40m per year so I’m pretty sure female athletes aren’t going to be good with 10% and only a handful of sports at the varsity level while football has over 100 scholarships and millions of dollars in spending.

Huh? I get the body clock thing but it’s not THAT serious.
The body clock issue is a thing.

But what is more absurd and embarrassing for the B10 is TV related with an ET kickoff of 11 PM (Rutgers time) that is catered solely for the benefit Fox's USC boytoy. One would hope the Rutgers AD privately told Petitti and Fox to go eff themselves when this kickoff was announced.

This is sad but inevitable when players are getting direct compensation from the universities. Forcing hard caps on roster sizes is just cruel and you are going to see men’s Olympic sports obliterated due to title 9.

Not surprising but still very sad for a lot of athletes out there
Opportunities for young Olympic Sport athletes to get an education & play with be reduced and maybe significantly. It will be sad to see those educational opportunities lost.

But the situation probably isn't dire from an Olympic development perspective. Will we see sport governing bodies take a bigger role and set up regional or state level training sites funded by corporate sponsors? Do we see a general shift to more a European model of athlete development.

I'd imagine the Rutgers AD cashed his check and moved on with his life.

I’m sure the Rutgers AD looked at that media money and said thank you sir may I have another. It is Rutgers after all. Plus having a game start at prime time on the west coast was always part of the plan. ****** but otherwise every west coast Friday game would be starting while people are still at work or driving home

Oh I had zero issue from the Olympic development side, the truly elite athletes didn’t spend much time at college if at all. Some did for certain sports but yeah a shift is in order.

It's an 8 PM local kickoff time. Has nothing to do with working people driving home, everything to do with Fox having the WS game prior to it. That is understandable but don't have the opponent from the effin East Coast.

Yeah thus a prime time game on the west coast? If it was 8pm on a Friday it would be 5pm there…not sure what you’re missing. The game was set well before the World Series

this is 100% a tv network decision, though

they knew they could potentially have a ny/la world series and they picked this game up all the way back in, I want to say August.

It follows the world series for those two markets.
I realize the WS impact and TV partner impact.

But it would be very simple for FOX to come to the Big10 back in spring 2024 and tell the conference that on Oct 25 the Friday kickoff will be at 11pm ET and could the conference schedule two PT/MT zone teams to play each other. My guess is FOX would have been OK to show UCLA vs. UW tonight.

Or you know there’s this thing called the World Series that is on right before the game this pushing it back.

I travel coast to coast a lot and the body clock thing is really not as big of an issue as it’s made out to be. Especially for 18-22 year olds.

As much as I love college sports, there’s something irrational about the whole thing (as evidenced by no other countries having anything like this). In terms of % I was probably a higher % student than a wrestler but I got unsolicited calls from wrestling coaches offering me scholarships and nobody was coming to my door with academic scholarships, they weren’t hanging from trees when I shook them either.

I know these athletic scholarships disappearing won’t transform into academic scholarships, but it doesn’t make the athletic scholarships rational either.

I’m pretty sure this game was scheduled awhile ago, I remember when the season schedule was released this was a minor talking point. It’s been on the books for awhile.

This is really only an issue for people who are desperately looking for a reason for it to be. Like iowas protected rivals no one cares.

Not sure you're going to max physical effort early/late depending where you live.

But it's also not just the game time. The game will get over between 2 to 2:30am ET. Players will then shower and depending on travel/hotel they could very well end up pulling an all nighter!

Sure they can do it, but is it in the best interest of their physical and mental health. Which we have been told repeatedly by University leadership is a top priority. I'd be willing to bet, if college athletes have a CBA- issues like this wouldn't happen.

I read an article that said Fox specifically planned this months ago because they knew the World Series would be this week and they have been hoping against hope to get EITHER the Yankees OR the Dodgers in the World Series to be the lead-in to this game and how happy they are because they ended up getting not just one but BOTH of those teams into the WS.

And the fact that some USC players will be tired flying home from the game is not something that anyone at Fox cares about at all.

I see people like Wilner on twitter always pointing these travel issues out and I agree there is a non-zero chance that eventually the TV execs push it too far and the schools decide they are done with it. But right now they all need every last dollar they can get so it’s not changing any time soon.

I’m pretty sure they can chill on their chartered plane and then fly back and relax in their multimillion dollar facility while going to school for free and collecting a NIL check and thank god that Rutgers isn’t in danger of having its AD going under.

Again. No one is complaining except people in other conferences who are looking for a reason to

That part I agree with. If/when the players ever unionize, I could easily see this being something that they push for. Like maybe stipulating only one situation like this per team, per season or something.

Games in LA man, that’s why it’s happening at this time. No one from USC is going to be tired and I’m sure they expected USC to be ranked right now too.

I live on the west coast and frequently travel to the east coast for work and the Midwest to see my family. I’m not playing football but my point remains.

Our team didn’t get home from the West Virginia game until like 4am. It happens in every league every week this isn’t some Fox conspiracy.
