Ray Lima?

This class would’ve been MC’s first recruiting class* in Ames. So obviously nobody’s expecting much. That being said, David Montgomery and Hakeem Butler would’ve been drafted as seniors this year. I’m not sure if they would’ve been drafted any better. than they had or not.

But here’s an interesting question for all you prognosticators out there. What would you rather???
1.) keep Butler and Montgomery for 2019 for the possibility of having the previous season of Baylor 2019 and risk losing the recruits we got from the 2019 class

or

2.) keep what we have

That’s a good question. I would probably take Butler and Montgomery one more year because our offense would have been ******* awesome with those two. I feel like it would have been the difference in the close games we lost to Iowa, Baylor, and maybe OU. That’s assuming Butler doesn’t get hurt like he did. Also I trust CMC to recruit good replacements in the future.

NFL scouts are lazy and still under the impression we're still terrible. Pisses me off

With all due respect, a few years of NFL league minimum can set you up for life. I'd take the annoying work outs for a few years if I had the choice.

As far as Iowa State players, remember when Kirby was "the best punter in college football"? We over estimate our guys because we're fanatics.
Statistically he was.

Maybe Lima was a casualty of our 3-man line. Tough to record a lot of stats when you go 3 on 5. But Ray plugging up the middle made everyone else better around him.

This just isn’t true. If you have NFL talent, scouts will most likely find you. Especially at the NFL level. There were Division II players drafted so it’s not like scouts watch the top 25 teams only.

What is/was the knock on Lima? Too slow? That guy was a beast for us.

The knock was that the only fashioned middle plugger nose tackle is a thing of the past in the NFL. Ray isn’t much of a pass rusher and that is the league now. Our tackles we are getting now are better suited for today’s game.

idk if thats true, there are quite a few teams that play a 3-4 and still rely on a nose tackle. I think roughly half the teams in the league play a 3-4 base

But even those guys are rotating out on 2nd and 3rd downs. So that makes that style of player much less valuable. Look at Brown and Kinlaw. Both are much more pure athletes than Ray. I do think he will stick in the NFL though because he is good at what he does.

Doesn't shed blocks well, and like someone said before, it's a pass rush league largely. If the Ravens find more success and others try to copy I could see Ray's type becoming more at need. You're either a freak or you're not at Ray's skill set.

People see what they are looking for, and they hear what they are listening for. If every NFL team were scouting at an optimal level we wouldn't have dynasties or terrible organizations.

NFL scouts are not lazy, the league has changed with the type of player you have in the interior. When you look at guys like Aaron Donald or Derrick Brown (Auburn) this year, it's about creating pressure right up the middle. The Ray Lima type of player (run stuffer) isn't as valuable in today's NFL.

NFL teams know they can get that kind of player late in the 6th, 7th rd or undrafted as they are not going to be a 3 down type of player. Ray Lima was a great college player and transformer our defense. But for NFL standards he's only 6'3 303 pounds which isn't elite size.

They do find obscure players, but they also miss a ton. They also over project an incredibly high number of players every year.

Haven't seen any discussion on La'Michael Pettway. What's his drawback? Speed I assume?

He's a big, strong body and had much more sure hands than even Lazzard & Butler during their time here in my opinion.

This is why I was stunned that Lima didn't get picked, even if a late-rounder. Plugged the middle on a 3-man against 5, yet linemen from several average teams got taken.

A Dtackle that can create a lot of pressure up the middle is devastating to the spread type offenses that are becoming more common in the NFL.

I’ll let you in on a little secret. Charlie Kolar chose to stick around for another year. So now we have a chance for Baylor’s 2019 in 2020.

For that matter, if everyone “sticks around” who can after the ‘20 season, Baylor’s ‘19 < ISU ‘21.
