4. IOWA STATE CYCLONES
If this was just about ranking individual QB’s ISU might be higher, but remember it’s the unit as a whole. We all know its Brock Purdy’s unit, who is considered by some to be a first round draft pick in next year’s NFL Draft. He was the Second-Team All-Big 12 quarterback last season after setting 18 team records during the season. He threw for nearly 4,000 yards with 27 touchdown passes and his nine games of at least 300 passing yards ranked fourth in the nation. However behind Purdy there is not much experience to speak of. Yet there is talent coming in as Matt Campbell recruited two four-star freshmen in Aidan Bouman and Hunter Dekkers. It’s likely one of those two will take the reins from Purdy in 2021, but for now, all eyes are on one guy in Ames, and there isn’t much to fall back on.

Ranking the sooners ahead of us based on hype? Also charlie brewer is a stiff breeze to the head away from being a vegetable, it's irresponsible that he is playing still.

To me it always made less sense to rank a QB unit as a whole compared to other positions such as RB, WR, or really any other position group other than punter or kicker.
If you have one guy that is going to take every single snap at a position thoughout the entire season with the only real exceptions being injury or a huge score differential then the impact of the #2 and #3 QB is relatively low compared to the replacement players at the other position groups.

Go ask coaching staffs across the nation to pick a QB unit to replace their own and I would wager a guess that Iowa State finishes on par with Texas and ahead of Baylor and Oklahoma.

but they ranked the sooners ahead of us with 2 guys who haven't played at all..
That is a legitimate topic of discussion. It isn't a legitimate topic of discussion to say "they ranked Purdy at #4" when they didn't. They even said in the write up that if it was just Purdy alone he would rank higher but there are just a bunch of question marks behind him.

Look back at how often ISU has had a single QB take every meaningful snap in a season in the last 10-20 years. It hardly ever happens. And there are probably other times that a starting QB has continued playing despite being limited by injury due to the lack of confidence in a back up. On the surface it may matter a little bit less, but considering how much the QB position matters to the team, it is probably nearly as important overall.

Did you see how much experience the #3 team had? That was all question marks.

Once we get to midseason, Bouman and Dekkers would be in just as good of a position as Brock was as a true freshman.

Did you see where I said questioning their selection of the OU staff was a legitimate topic? It was right in the post you quoted. I wasn't arguing that. I was simply saying that someone having a beef with "Purdy being picked 4th in the league" wasn't understanding what was ranked 4th here.

I couldn't even name the QBs at WVU, KU, or TCU (after Duggan) without clicking the link.

Seems to me that they wanted ISU in the number four spot--behind the blue blood$. So they doctored up a logic to make that happen.

After reading this article and the odd criteria used to justify the rankings, I'm a little shocked to see Iowa State above Oklahoma State. I get that our young guys lack experience, but so does virtually every other backup QB in it league. The fact he has Baylor at 4 should have made me stop reading on the spot. Brewer isn't good enough to justify that, and maybe they have a quality backup, but if you were to composite score Brewer and his backups, you still wouldn't have a QB as good as Purdy.

just wanted to try my own ranking for fun, and individual only, none of this QB room BS:
1. Brock Purdy
2. (m)Ehlinger
3. Charlie Brewer
4. Spencer Sanders
5. Skylar Thompson
6. Alan Bowman
7. RATTLER
8. Doege
9. Downing/ Brown
10. MacVittie/ Kendrick
