Some bird picks to invite you all to come out with some pics for the thread. Darn twigs kinda marred these pics of a green heron from a couple days ago.

Hate to say it but all I see are three of these

I saw this article on io9 this week and had to share it in this thread. The article is about the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, which turned 20 years old this past Tuesday. The Chandra is a space telescope, similar to Hubble, only this telescope takes X-ray images. From the article:

But unlike many Hubble images, which typically contain lots of visible light and are color shifted for aesthetic or explanatory reasons, X-rays aren’t visible to our eyes, so all of Chandra’s images must be presented in false color. Typically, these images are superimposed onto visible-light images to illustrate the whole scene. It’s not what the area would look like to our eyes, but it’s an additional filter through which to look at the universe, one that captures important data left out by other telescopes.

Here is an image taken from the Chandra back in 2004, which actually proved the existince of dark matter. Image and explanation from the article:

sbkhnhqw3stbbxnrihdv.jpg

The cluster itself is the result of two large clusters of galaxies colliding with one another, with the galaxies’ visible light shown in white and orange. The X-rays at the center of the image are shown in pink and were emitted by regular matter in the center.

But the shocking find for astronomers was the blue bits. The blue represents where most of the mass of the cluster is located, based on the principle of gravitational lensing, where heavy objects warp the light from stars and galaxies shining behind them. Basically, the image shows that most of the “stuff” in the image isn’t where the regular matter is (pink), but where the blue is. Scientists think that when the two clusters collided, the dark matter kept moving without interacting, while much of the regular matter slowed down from the collision and stayed in the center.
I would highly recommend giving the article a read, or if nothing else just looking at the pretty pictures:

Maybe already covered here but don't want to dig back though the thread, so, what photo editing software do you all use?

Had a limited version of Photoshop a long time ago but won't load onto last computer system update. Been bumming along with GIMP the free open source editor. Thinking maybe I should change. I'd like to take an editing course and everything is Adobe for tutorials.

I've played with GIMP a bit. Supposedly it has everything Adobe had on it's last release. The only thing I have found is making the blacks just a hair blacker to bring up the contrast and you can accentuate your colors a bit as well.
There are some extensions for Photoshop that you just click on and make your picture go wow!
When I took that walking course a month ago he took a photo of mine and was showing us those extensions.

I do the $10/month Adobe Creative Cloud thing that has Photoshop and Lightroom (which I prefer).

I've been a huge fan of photography for a while now, and feel like I have a pretty good eye for the stuff. A few of my friends agreed, so I bit the bullet and started a photography Instagram account. Been solely shooting on my iPhone and still think my pictures are pretty solid, just scrolling through my feed and seeing the professional photographs compared to mine it is night and day, but alone it looks fine. With that said, I'm leaning into the idea of getting a nice camera.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I usually shoot nature and architecture, but really am not too picky. Don't want to spend a fortune, but willing to fork up a bit if its worth the price.

Any insight is helpful.

I shoot Canon (my current main camera is a Canon 5D Mark III). I love the ease of use, but the sensors are inferior to Nikon/Sony, so it's not as good in low light. I've been eyeballing either a Nikon D7500 or a Nikon D500.
