The last time I posted in this thread I mentioned that I was glad I had a phone that took good pictures because I didn't want to spend the money on a nice camera. Well, that didn't last long. About a year ago I bought a used Canon T4i on eBay and it's been a wonderful investment. Here are some pictures I took in Colorado this past summer:

That's great info about Trevi Fountain. We're staying super-duper close, at an AirBnB right by the bridge to Castel Sant'Angelo (or however you spell it without looking it up). So, that gives us a lot of flexibility about visiting - I'll make sure to NOT do it in mid-day. I've heard nighttime is better with fewer crowds? Do you think at dusk, or after dark?
Isn't it just amazing to think those places have been around since before Christ? Before or during Caesar?! It's overwhelming. We have nothing like that in the US, it's so humbling.
The lighting at Trevi at night is gorgeous; a point & shoot doesn't do it justice but your fancier camera probably would. :)
Antiquity is the one thing in Europe that has fascinated us more than anything else. We have some really old redwoods and cliff dwellings in the US, but we don't have the same volume and variety of civilization here. We were at a ruin in Britain that had one of those above-ground tombs of a crusader in a back corner. Out front was an Oak tree that was massive, and was planted when he was buried. Trees and churches that are 100s of years older than our country, for Pete's sake...
Pretty amazing

One of my favorite pictures was of one of the statues (known as the breezy maniacs) on bridge crossing the Tiber leading to Castel Sant'Angelo. There was renovation work on the bridge so I caught a bit of scaffolding at the bottom of the frame which gave it kind of cloudy look.

Here is a picture taken from the top of the dome at St. Peter's. It really doesn't capture the sheer size of the plaza. I think they say it can fit 200,000 people.

You are lucky you got to see it out of construction! We went in 13' and I was disappointed because it didn't have water in it and scaffolding all around it.
Speaking of missing stuff, when I was at the Vatican The Last Judgement was undergoing it's cleaning and restoration so it was covered. At least the ceiling was finished and in full view.

Getting back to the original theme. One of my favorite pictures that I have taken was of Mount Rushmore.

My brother used this picture I took of Devil's Tower in one of his text books. So technically I am a published photographer.

These are remarkable! You have an amazing eye and great handle on how everything works together. I love these!

You rock! I'll try and get there at night, then - that makes a ton of sense.

YES! We went to cliff dwellings in Phoenix when I was growing up, and they're just amazing. You're right, it's just breathtaking how it is like stepping back in time. England has always been my top bucket-list destination!

I can't wait - our AirBnB is literally within a stone's throw of the bridge, I can't wait to go rolling around down there all of the time! That photo is just breathtaking!!!

As part of my overall shift in life philosophy, I've gone in the opposite direction and reduced complexity in all aspects. For cameras, this meant getting rid of the DSLR inflationary lifestyle. No more mounted flash, zoom, telescope, etc. All that weight GONE!

Currently use a mirrorless Fuji with fast fixed lens. May get a tiny pancake wide-angle lens and call it a day. Whole setup can fit in a large pocket and I use my own feet and available natural light. It's refreshing and I don't miss the DSLR. Might get some gaffer tape and grunge it up even more. Blending in even more. Anonymous.

IMO most camera bags stand out badly. Look at Think Tank shoulder bags (Retrospective).
I just use my phone now.

I'm so glad someone thought to bump this thread!!

I don't get a chance to get many "fun" photos these days, as it's become a side job now. I can't wait to go to Italy and actually enjoy structuring art and fun in photos, you know?

I guess I should add this. It's a bit over exposed but I had to guess on the settings and you don't have a lot of time to waste messing around. You have to sit back and enjoy the moment.

My trip to Europe around the Mediterranean. All of these photos are from my phone, so quality isn't outstanding. Will try to upload some from the camera to share.

I was going through some old photos because my brother was looking for some and this is one I really like from County Clare in Ireland. Maybe it's the age but this really doesn't look as vibrant as I remember.

These pictures were taken a couple months ago around Ames. The flowers and the butterfly are from Reiman Gardens, the first bridge is where 150th St. (obviously) crosses the Skunk River north of Ames, and the second bridge is near Soper's Mill north of Ames. Also, here's your riddle for the day: one of these pictures was actually taken in Colorado. Can you guess which one it is?
