Referendum has been proposed in my town. It would be building a elementary school, 4k-6th, onto the high school, moving 7th and 8th into the high school, and tearing down the elementary and middle schools, which were built in the 50s. The problem with referendums in my town is all the older people, anyone who graduated in the 50s-60s, don't vote for referendums because they survived the schools so they are still good in their opinion. Elementary school has no AC, and there is asbestos in it too.
Could be worse, at least the schools aren't fire traps. This is the ancient grade school I attended. Fire trap from 1880's or so. Wood floor and wood stairwells. Got to attend one semester of 6th grade in the school that replaced it. Nation didn't get serious about replacing these old structures until 92 kids died in a school fire in a Chicago Catholic school in the late '50's when I was seven. The pictures in Life magazine scared little Boxster. Of course, back then no one was coming into schools to kill kids with assault rifles so we did have that going for us.
