We U-hauled it from San Francisco to Ames. When we arrived, a couple of faculty members from the ex's department brought over a crew of grad students, and they made very short work of unloading and helping to arrange furniture for us. Several wives helped me put kitchen stuff away and kept our boys entertained and out from underfoot (they were 3 & 4 at the time). They also consumed mass quantities of beer. When they were done, they collected up all the packing paper & cardboard and loaded it into the back of a pickup. Then they put all the empty cans in a couple of garbage bags and presented them to us as "housewarming gift". We were completely confused. California didn't have can redemption fees when we were there. :D

If you can afford it, always go with movers. It’s so much more ridiculously easier. Most movers even prefer that they do the packing of the boxes for insurance purposes.

I guess it is a cost benefit analysis to me. If the rough estimate of $100/hr in that thread is true I would guess It would take at least an hour or two at both ends plus say an hour of transit time. That's already $500 alone and I would guess that estimate is on the low end.

I can rent a truck for roughly $100. Throw in maybe another $100 of pizza and drinks and I am saving $300. Seems worth it to me but I come from several generations of cheapskates.

I honestly had never seen or heard of people using movers for local moves and really only ever heard of professional movers being used when it was cross country usually being paid for by an employer. Then again I have been accused of living under a rock before.

I wondered about names/types of beer, but then I read "Most of the time, inanimate objects are treated as male." That answered it.

Another lesson learned on CF myself and my friends/family are the only people that get friends/family to help them move. Everyone else hires movers and I am a **** for asking them to help.

When we moved in Jan/Feb we had my parents, 3 siblings, sisters bf and the gfs parents help us. GF has A LOT of stuff though.

We had neighbors hire professional movers when they moved................across the street. We didn’t welcome them since they only moved like 200 feet.

When my mother moved we used a service called Crowning Touch senior moving. Being that most seniors will downsize at some point the woman who started this did so with that in mind. She comes to your home and you tell her what furniture you want and what you don't want. She decides if she can sell it and will give you an estimate as to what she thinks you'll get for it.

Her crew will come back and pack up and remove what you don't want and she puts it in her consignment shop. You pay for the labor but the consignment shop is 50/50 so depending on how much stuff you sell you recoup a decent amount of your moving expenses.

My sisters boxed up all the other stuff and I moved the majority of those boxes from the old house to the new. Mom still kept way too much stuff. The moving crew came and wrapped and packed all the furniture in one day and then delivered and unpacked the next day.

I expected the bill to be somewhere near $10,000 and it was about $3,500. The first consignment check that mom got was a little over $1,000 so that knocked it down to $2,500. I'm not sure what other checks she got from the consignment.

I’m more than willing to pay a little more if it means less work for me. I can change my own oil, but I’m happier paying more to have it done so I can do other things with my time, for example.

When we moved from Carroll to Ames hubby’s company paid for our move (even though he was working for the same company—they were relocating headquarters). A few months later he was let go due to a downturn in biofuels at the time. So in essence we got paid to move to Ames.

My parents just moved this week. They packed their own stuff since the movers wanted $40/hr to move. The small town movers they hired were okay, not great. Their situation was a bit unique that even though there are moving here permanently, they did not need to totally empty out the house. There are things that got moved that were supposed to stay. They will just run it back later.

Mine pooped again today. Got it running again a few hours later by rebooting and disconnecting/reconnecting some sensors stuff. Not sure what worked but it fired again. Nobody can come to look at it till late tomorrow. Damn intermittent problem will be likely a bear to figure out cause you know it will be running perfectly tomorrow.

Am I the only one who thinks these two could have had the same parents?

high limit sensor?? Those are a few bucks and not to bad to fix. My moms had the exhaust fan give out. I had to take a wire, stick that into the fan and spin the wheel to get it going. Sticking wires into an electric motor at night while tired is not something that is relaxing to do.

It's the reason we work. To make money so we can pay people to do other stuff for us.* I could have jacked the Audi up and changed off the tires last week but the minions at the Audi dealer did it for $55.

* Well, and to buy stuff like wine and pies.

We only lived there 4 years, which was 4 years too long. Mr. Birdy is Birdy and Birdy is Birdy. He ghost reads but very very rarely posts (under my name).
