Random Thoughts XI (Eleven Pipers Piping)

Bell choir rehearsal tonight. Director & his wife (one of the other ringers) have a young daughter, about 2-1/2 years old. No child care at the church, so mom plays bells at the end of one of the two rows of tables, and daughter plays with her toys & books on the floor next to her. She's a little angel.

We were stopped, talking about a problem spot, and director says "okay, on the count of three..." From down below the end of the table in a gravelly little voice we hear "onnnnnne, twooooooo, threeeeeeee". We all completely lost it. When the director was done laughing, he raised the baton & held up one finger, then two, then three.

I was G4 and A4 when I played. I still could do it now, but only if the notes were marked.

I visited Mad Town when I was a senior in HS and quickly came to the conclusion that I probably wouldn't get much studying done there. So I went to ISU instead........

Went to Madison as a freshman club trip at ISU went to the Kit Kat Klub, only time I've seen people doing lines of coke in my life. They were snorting them right off the edge of the table. I quickly realized we weren't in Ames anymore.

It's on our agenda to look at it some time. I believe their's some limited reciprocity with Minnesota. She also wants to look at EIU, unfortunately. She just got her ACT score yesterday. It's a pretty good score so she may end up getting some really good offers from private colleges. Although it's great news, it does complicate the college search a bit.

Anywhere but EIU.

I used to play bass bells - mostly from F4 to B4. I can't hold the bigger bells properly any more (my thumb problems) so I moved up to the treble clef. We tend to move around a bit, but most of the time I'm in the G5 to D6 range.
I like the variety. My skill level is somewhere in the middle of the pack. There's 11 of us, five of us can sight read anything. A couple of us (me included) can sight read, but not as quickly & accurately as the others. A couple more can sight read inaccurately, and we have two who can't read music. One of them plays one bell, and rings whenever the director points at her. The other is a percussionist...she can count keep time, and marks her notes to ring them at the proper time. Quite a variety, but we really enjoy what we do. Some of us have been making music together in choir & bells for 40 years or more. :D

I just went and bought Mrs. Velo flowers for no reason. Do you think she will wonder what I did wrong?

Yep, you're in trouble for doing something randomly nice. I hope I'm wrong and you get compensated accordingly for doing a random act of niceness.

Do you use chimes? Hated those things.

The gal presenters on Globe Trekker are so much more interesting than their male counterparts, by a huge degree. Tonight was a repeat on the Nile that I had to watch again because Holly Morris is awesome.

I think after Bradley Cooper left, the male talent on that show disappeared. I was also saddened when Samantha Brown left (I think she did? I haven’t seen her on there in forever.)

Since @jcyclonee is always accusing me of being a Counciltuckian, let me chime in that you may have a casino going in on your side of the river in Carter Lake. The Ponca Tribe now has authorization from the Feds, anyway.
Glad to see you're keeping up on happenings in your neighboring community right across the river.

I keep up with all things in my district, though Carter Lake is not a "neighboring community", thank God! That there is one weird and wacky place.

Their former mayor was quoted in the paper as saying something to the effect "Yes, I know what I'm doing is against the law, but the people of Carter Lake knew that when they elected me!"

On one occasion, their Chief of Police shot another officer in his office (accidentally it seems).

I was waiting in the Magistrate Courtroom over in Council Bluffs one time when Johnny (Yes, the "Jet") Rodgers was being prosecuted for a seat belt ticket and he made a pretty eloquent argument about profiling by the Carter Lake police.

Yes, Cool Stories Bro on all.

No wonder Carter Lake's weird. It's on the wrong side of the river.

Do you need one?

Need one? Meh not really but it has certainly been on the radar of a nice to have as another thing to do and at least one proposal was marketed as part of the west side post flood reviatalization. @Rabbuk and @bawbie can correct me if I am wrong because I was not here for them but I believe this is the third attempt in the last six years or so to get one. One of those attempts was approved by the board but had to go to the polls to approve it and it was turned down there. There were a couple of studies down on the market this time and they all pretty much said that there is not enough growth to handle another casino and thus it would canabalize the current casinos in the area (four within an hour and another within an hour and a half).
