Random Thoughts VIII: The Ocho

...anyone else find it odd when Springsteen's 'Born in the U.S.A.' gets played at places like sporting events?

It's not viewed as, or last I knew, meant to be, patriotic.
I've been saying that for 30 years. But like Boxster said. People only hear the refrain.

So our school stinks at softball (from HS on down, MS wasn't horrible but not competitive level of play) but we do have a pretty decent volleyball pipeline. Our HS almost went to state last year and only lost one senior. Our 8th grade team has a group of 6 who all play club level ball at various levels. They are fun to watch. Supposedly mine is only playing on the A team because another girl is injured, we will see if coach switches it up once she comes back. I'm just a tad biased, but I seriously think the only thing this other girl had going for her was height. Mine is only 5'1" playing next to girls who are 5'7"-5'10", but she can hold her own in the front row.

Went to my daughters VB yesterday. The 7th grade game was going on before it, I think it was mostly B team at the time. 21-19 and only 3-4 serves cleared the net. Couple barely crossed the serve line. It was PAINFUL to watch.

Also, I can speak for smaller schools, no experience at the big schools, but politics are huge in any age sports. I routinely see kids in spots they don't belong, but their dad coaches something or I hear they are related to so and so, kid has a legendary name but no athletic bone in their body. All kinds of things. Even if your kid is way more talented they may get benched or move to a spot that they can't excel in in order to get a less deserving kid playing. We have one kid who got a OWI and the long time established HC of a sport blamed it on his teammates and not him (btw, 3rd time the kids been nailed by the cops with something).

Weeellll...as long as I need it. (i.e. - Didn't see the doctor, and no insurance...soooo...) It's my left knee, which is my "bad" knee. But, both of my knees are bad, so that isn't saying a lot. It was never swollen, so there's that.

A basic brace or full immobilizer? Don't wear the full immobilizer unless you are waiting for surgery. A basic brace with crutches is better.

I make no secret of the fact that I have a wee bit of a leadfoot (it's the Texan in me)...but as of this morning I no longer feel guilty about it.
Per the morning show, the highest speed clocked by a trooper in this state this year was 152mph. Compared to that, I'm small potatoes.

Yeah but I bet they were all serving overhand though. I understand teaching that in the long run, but let them get the ball across the net so they can at least try to play.

I will have that when I watch the 5th grader play rec ball. They play with a shortened court and mine still can't get a serve over. ;) On the 8th grade team at least 3 of them have an effective jump serve. One poor girl on the other team took it to the face about three times in a row yesterday.

Mine is the one who is a head shorter than the rest.

She did have an impressive left-handed tip last night

And not my pictures, there is a gal who takes pictures for our school activities as a side hobby.

Anybody else picturing KC's commute being like this?

Unfortunately no. Many were still underhand and they still couldn't get it over halfway.

I hadn't seen her FB posts of it yet. Unless it's a different older lady that is doing volleyball. :)

I don't have diabetes

My dad didn't really either, but a change in medicine and age caused him to suddenly develop really bad eyesight and light headedness. The meds he was taking jumped his system enough that he now has full blown issues with out the diabetic meds. Before he was just eating healthier and his symptoms had gone away.

I dropped the teenage girl off at school today and let her choose the radio station this morning. She got out of the car and a Ke$ha song came on. I kind of liked it. I know I shouldn't like it and it's not very good music but tell me why does Tik Tok have to be so catchy, dammit?

I'll just go and put this paper bag over my head for a while so that nobody recognizes me.
