so volleyball. We signed up for the rec league. I know nothing about this bar or what qualifies as "rec" to them. Because it's a reschedule night, half my team was out of town. I got two subs, no biggie. Pull in tonight and couple friend are there and ready to go. They point out that they believe the people on the court are who we play. Mentioned that they've been warming up for 15 minutes and are a bit intimidating. Said even the "short girl" spiked. Welp.
Get a snapchat from one of the subs. They forgot (even though we mentioned it last night at kickball) and were out of town. Haven't heard from the other sub and don't have her number. So DH and I go to practice a bit and immediately notice the field is about 25% deeper than in Jamaica. And the net is higher and the ball is very different. We practice a couple serves and it's BAD. We go over to start and one of the bar staff asks if we need a sub. Yes please!
So we get started and I serve first. It goes off my hand and shanks hard right about 10 feet. Probably the worst serve I have ever done in my life. So bad. And serving is probably what I do best so I'm thinking this doesn't bode well.
They serve. And serve. And serve. We were down like 10-0 before we returned the ball over the net. I'm like if this is the "rec" league, we are rekt. The next 6 Mondays are going to suck hard. Somewhere in this misery the other sub shows up and we get her in. So now we at least have 6 people to cover this ******* GIANT court. At some point they botch a serve and we get a point or two. They started serving backwards over their heads. Pity serves. Halfway through the first set. But then they felt the need to do a really cheap tip and then a really hard spike. Think those were both by the same guy who served like 10 points on us. Like really? Don't be a **** ******. I was shanking all my digs. Badly. I realize now that the ball is lighter and floats more. So what worked in Jamaica won't work here - I'm getting too close and the ball floats and then I dig off my biceps which doesn't really work.
Final score first set was 21-4. We didn't even make a full rotation - that first botched serve of mine was the only time I served that set.
So we switch sides and change up our rotation a bit. Band-aid on an amputation and all that.
But it got a little better - I wasn't watching the score but DH says we were up like 5-2. I serve first for us again and got a couple aces! Yay! DH (who also had a horrendous serve first set) tries a couple underhand and hey, we are getting the ball over the net! At some point we get into more of a rhythm and figure out how the ball is moving, get more aggressive about going after it and knowing what the person next to you is going to do. All of a sudden we are up like 18-15. I got to serve again in this set and again ran off about four serves. They would dig too close to the net and I was racking up aces. We end up winning like 21-18! Holy ****, we are going to a third! Our bar guy sub is like nice job, we are improving! We figured the other team was probably sleeping a bit because hey, how much effort would you really think is needed to beat us after that first set?
So we go to the third. They are trying much harder now. But we are really starting to gel. They spike and DH/husband of couple friend get great digs. Bar guy is great up front. DH had switched back to overhand serving and he went right before me. He served a bunch and then I went and got like 3 aces in a row. I got us like a 3 point lead. At this point I could visibly see that they were annoyed when I came up to serve. Later in the 3rd, I did it again. I did have a couple go short which is how I ended my serving. We ended up WINNING! We WON the game! So pretty quickly they ask if we want to play a fourth for fun. We're surprised but like sure, we could use the practice! So we are ready to go but they aren't. Bar guy goes over and comes back. Says they are "pretty salty". So they wanted a fourth set mostly to show that yeah, they are still better than us, they just got soft on us.
We beat them again.
I don't know what my final count was, but I probably had something like 8-9 aces. Bar guy sub and our other sub were both really good - our actual team people on Monday better live up to it! Couple friend and DH and I went in to get a beer and spent quite a bit of time laughing about how it went. DH said we straight up hustled them with that first set.
It was great.
