I think it was more the "nuts dragging on the ground" part that confused people.

Oil if oak. Water based is okay if maple since maple looks good in the clear water based cover. Oil has the amber tone that looks best if your floor is red oak. Of course oil based takes lots of time between coats so you might be out of a room longer if it's a refining project.
