I'm sober and I cheer for them. :)

I enjoy the contributions they make to the game day (and the same for the pep band at basketball games).

I'll be honest, I've had a blind hatred for the marching band ever since high school when they cost is a 15 hard penalty at the start of second half for taking too long. People, outside of music nerds (I'm looking at you Cowgirl) don't go to a game to see the marching band. Stop acting like you're big ****!

There. That's my rant. My hatred is more of a biased hatred, and I'll openly admit it.

For all you pie weirdos, someone brought apple pie into the office this morning as well as some kind of Apple crisp bars that are amazing. Be jelly.

why is it the "varsity" marching band? there is no JV in college. that always annoyed me.

I believe the story goes back to the Walden days and the band was given permission to use the football locker room to change after a game. No one told Walden and when he walked in he said something along the lines of "This is the varsity locker room". To which a smart assed band member said "We are the varsity band". The rest is history.

I believe there is also a band joke about the Hawkeye marching band being the JV band.

Well, when you're the third best HS marching band in the state, and the football team sucks...(and I'm talking Illinois...not Nebraska or South Dakota)

"Varsity" Marching Band - The above story from wxman is partially correct. Supposedly, it was the late 70's, before Walden, and it was an assistant coach

From the band website:
Q: Why is it called the ISUCF’V’MB?
A: We’ll tell you when you get here!

From Wikipedia:
The band added a "V" to its acronym in 1979 when members were using the football team's showers after a game in preparation for a trip to perform for the Kansas City Chiefs. When confronted by head football coach Earl Bruce, a bass drum player responded that they were the "Varsity Band".

That would be the fault of the band director for not getting them off the field fast enough. When I was in marching band we were always done with enough time to get off the field and form a tunnel to play the fight song for the team as they ran by to get ready for the 3rd quarter.
