As a lumber guy, I always cringe when I see fine woodwork (especially cherry, OMG don't people know how much it
costs?) being painted over. I know the trend is toward paint, rather than stain, but like
@RunninMan, I'm a traditionalist and much prefer the warmth of stained wood.
Years ago, I had an old three-drawer, curved front dresser that we had inherited from the in-laws. It had been painted (many times), so I looked underneath to see if it might be worth restoring. It looked like either birch or maple, so I decided to give it a shot.
Long story short, upon stripping it I discovered it was
birds'-eye maple. After a bit of light sanding, I hand-rubbed several coats of tung oil into the veneer.....it was absolutely gorgeous. Almost made you dizzy looking at it.
Now, who would paint over that? Here'e an example:
