So was it just a poem or a true story passed on as a poem? Sad if the second.
Says it was a true story from Kentucky in 1831, but who really knows?
It's one of those stories where it probably doesn't matter if the exact case in the poem is true, because it's been documented that slave parents did actually do that sort of thing for that very reason.
In this poem, the mother had been beaten the night before by her owner. I suspect there was an unstated motive of revenge in there, too.
