So was it just a poem or a true story passed on as a poem? Sad if the second.

Says it was a true story from Kentucky in 1831, but who really knows?
It's one of those stories where it probably doesn't matter if the exact case in the poem is true, because it's been documented that slave parents did actually do that sort of thing for that very reason.

In this poem, the mother had been beaten the night before by her owner. I suspect there was an unstated motive of revenge in there, too.

The History Channels special tonight on Pearl Harbor is pretty good. Factual and pretty straightforward. Not as confident on the upcoming specials though. The advertising sounds like they are going to be focusing on sensationalism and " the true story", in other words hyped up story telling.

Target has once again won my undying love, and amazon is on my hate list at the moment. Amazon used to do price adjustments is the price went down within a week of purchase. They no longer do this. A big gift I purchased was $25 lower today. No price match. Tried to reorder so I could return the more expensive one. Apparently this item is limited to one per household (not stated anywhere on the page). Go to Target.com, item is same price plus red card discount plus used a small gift card. Even though I had to pay tax, ended up saving almost $30 over amazon. Already had an amazon return to do at UPS so will just do this one at the same time. /endCGtyperant
