Random Thoughts IV

My parents are in a position where they can offer help if needed, but we try to do this adult thing on our own. The in-laws are on more of a fixed income, and we would never think of asking them for financial help. We may have to help them out at some point.

In a somewhat related note, just paid off the last of my student loans!! Woo hoo! (And I haven't used those degrees or gotten a paycheck in the last 12.5 years)

Ehhh...my SIL was 19 when she married into the family. (BIL was 20? 21?) They've both got good heads on their shoulders, though. In other words, depends on the 19 yo.

P.S. - Horses are expensive! Yet another money suck.

Welcome back, BDK!

(and yes, your friend is a douchecanoe. You need to find new friends.)

To be fair to BDK...the chance of finding non-douchecanoe friends is pretty slim amongst the 17 YO population...was the same way when we were that young, will be when our kids are that age.

Shingles coming off the parental units old home. Will be expecting offers from Wxman. Nice commute down Hwy 13 to CR metro area. Or fly each day from the fab local airport with the 3500' runway! New shingles, new furnace, new A/C, new water heater. :)

One mile from "world class" whitewater!

Well since CG likes family rants.

A little background on my in-laws. They are wonderful people. They just don't know how to say no. This leads them to love paycheck to paycheck have a good chunk of debt and never really have any money. The sad part is that is all their kids know. So what happens when they get money? They want to spend it.

That and my wife's siblings know that all they have to do is ask and you have a good chance of getting it. Convertible rental car while on a trip to Florida with friends? Sure! First class tickets for a.honeymoon to Vegas? Sure! Always going to Florida or Vegas for vacation? Yup. Need money for groceries because I used mine on Starbucks? Here you go!

Meanwhile my wife and I are not getting any help. Paying off debt. Saving for a house. You know living like adults.

The kicker last night was my sister in law who is 19, just got married, has a great job (gets paid $500/week to watch one kid) had a horse basically gifted to her.

I hate to sound like I am whinning but for ****s sake. Is anyone ever going to step in and try and get them to look at their priorities?

I feel like reality will hit them when the parent well dries up and they try to come to you instead. Or the parents try to come to you. Don't be surprised.

I've wondered that about my sister. If they'll ever be like hey, it's time for you to move out and be a big girl. Though I do believe she pays for those type of fun things on her own. She just doesn't save anything and doesn't have to pay anything like rent, utilities, regular food, etc. It really does **** me off sometimes because it was never like that for me. I didn't go to concerts, spend weekends at bars, and get a car I couldn't afford at 22. I had loans and things to save for. My brother ******* one time because my mom had bought like 3 bags of groceries for me to take back to school. He was all "you are in college, you should have to pay for your own food". He's now 25, living a half mile from my parents and still eats most meals there. Granted he works on the farm, but he does get paid for that. So yeah. I understand the feeling. But I keep telling myself I'm making the right choices and someday, **** is going to hit the fan for people like that. And I won't feel bad for doing well when they just start getting their act together.

My son is a big Peppa fan. Not bad show as far as kids shows go. He watches them on YouTube, often in non-English.

Z keeps wanting to choose the Russian one! She also downloaded a phone game that was in Russian. She switched another game's language to Russian....... hmm maybe I need to find a Russian learning program.......

Her dad didn't read to her in Russian that I know of. :)

I have short hair so I never have hair ties. The girls are volleyball helpers again this year and we went to picture day/team scrimmage where they get their helper t-shirts and get a picture with the team. The guy in charge failed to order enough youth shirts, my 10yr old who is the size of a 7yr old got an adult small shirt. Had to borrow a hair tie from a friend who had an extra to tie up her shirt. Mom fail there, will throw extra hair ties in the volleyball bag.

We haven't looked at the volleyball schedule yet, but we should take Z again sometime. I think it's great that your girls get to do that.

glad I'm not the only one! I couldn't believe I didn't have one buried somewhere. Probably because I've done this before and used up the reserves without putting more in. Last week I forgot my gym bag entirely on Monday, and then forgot socks Wednesday. No hair tie was definitely worse than no socks. Burpees and jumps with sweaty hair getting in my face and mouth was not ok.

I had one class where my hair tie wasn't holding my hair and my hair fell down while doing push ups.

A few weeks ago I tried explaining to pants why no hair tie at the gym was so horrible. I'm glad others in here are backing that up.

That's because at Pants' gym, no hair tie is not that big a deal when you have to deal with prostitutes and guys throwing up all over the equipment. Just sayin'.

Speaking of catching up, did anyone welcome Birdy back. Did she post a summary of the summer?

Happy kids in school day!

Sounds suspicious.

Things I learned during my morning catch-up:

- 17 year-olds are as mature now as they were when I was that age. It was stupid, but I'd be pretty surprised if a good portion of us didn't have a story of a friend being a douchecanoe at that age.

- douchecanoe may be my new favorite word

- there are people out there that gift horses to other people

- I look like a genius for keeping a stockpile of hair ties in my glove compartment and center console and seat back in my car. The women in my life lose them like they lose their minds.

- someone else (KC) also watched the movie "Black and White" and enjoyed it

- 00 is going through the same "mass light bulb extinction" that I am going through

- the word lightning is hard. There is a youth soccer team in KC called the lightning and I see their name misspelled on nearly every website. I question whether they are actually named after something that removes darkness.

I didn't do stuff like that, but I spent plenty of time cleaning up after those who did...which probably colors my responses to Hoiball...and dictated my response if I caught MY kids doing that kind of crap. Most of y'all have not yet been the parents of teenagers. It's a joy and a torture wrapped into one package.

Personally, I think God starts our children off as adorable helpless little babies so that we become attached to them. This in turn prevents us from killing them when they are teenagers. :)

And douchecanoe makes me smile every time I see it!

it happened early last month. They had some friend on that night too saying what a good guy he was. Tonight was about the cops being cleared. They had shot at him while he was in the car, but didn't hit him. Oh, I just looked it up. It was his ex-wife on tonight. She apparently tried to intervene during the car chase.

Must have happened when I was on vacation
