Random Thoughts 17: Here we go again.

The Ash tree on our property finally died. Now I gotta pay someone to remove it before it topples over.
I have only had one tree that I didn't take down myself. Other than the 10-12' flowering crab years ago they have all (six others) been in the 25-35' range. The one I didn't take down was a white pine that had gotten a lot bigger (probably more like 50-65'). You are right, it is best to know your limits and I really felt that white pine was outside my comfort zone.

It worked out, though. The white pine was the last one to come down so I was able to get one quote for removing it along with removing most of the other stumps all in one visit.

These tree is huge. A neighbor offered to lend me their chainsaw but this thing is way too big for me to take on myself.

We did one today actually, first one we've done in a couple years actually. They've all been cut down or treated around here.
It appears that EAB first was reported in Hamilton County in 2018. The tree looked like it was dying and then it definitely went kaput this year. A guy in town is having Arbor Pro's do his tree soon and he was gonna have them swing over and look at ours.

So, look at myself in mirror and think "Maybe I should shave.". Hadn't shaved in a few days and was just heading over to workout so answer was "Why bother, who will be seeing you, a bunch of gym rats?" So, of course, I see the Workout Princess who I hadn't seen in so long that I figured she was going to another gym. And, of course, she is looking at me and I look like a street bum. Ack.

** Refresher, WP is an older woman so it's not creepy I think she's rather attractive and won't mind chatting with her.

FCWW#3?

Holy crap folks. We didn't have internet for a week so things for my computer piled up, was going to do them last night but the kid's baseball game went 13 innings. Son had the last 4.1 innings or so of it, he is more of a 1-2 innings type thrower. We burnt through pitchers. Got out of jam after jam but we couldn't score a run and then our errors caught up with us. Not many pitchers left for the next game.

Folks just got a quote to drop 2 came in at $1500 1st tree was a thousand but it's in a cramped location the 2nd was much easier. Pretty sure I'm going to rent a lift and turn it into a DIY project. I'm not chaser but I'm pretty sure I can handle it with the lift and taking my time.

Ours is in an open area. If they wanted to drop it without a lift, its completely feasible.

I had both my Ash trees cut down this winter, I planted those 25 years ago so it was a sad day.

The big one I have to drop was planted by me from one of those arbor day trees that they used to do in school. It survived being ran over by my cousin with a lawn mower when it was barely a twig.
Wonder if they still do Arbor Day in school? You don't hear much about it anymore.

The only real tree I paid to have cut down was at least $3k if I remember right. Giant silver maple that was slowly dying and hanging over the house, rotting from the inside out. Due to location they had to use a cherry picker/small crane and multiple climbers to get most of it down then carry around the house. Paying that much sucks but we are convinced it would have come down on the house (which we were in) during the derecho.

paid $900 this spring to take down a massive spruce where the top half of the tree had died. pretty simple takedown location was probably was it was (fairly) cheap. 3rd one we had to take down in the front of the house so now we have no protection from those northern winter winds.

Check with the NRSC at the county Farm Services Office they may be able to help you build a windbreak. Also ISU Extension could point you in the right direction.
