A few thoughts about Texas after watching the Texas/USC game last night.
  • When their defense was clicking, they looked really difficult. Similar to Iowa's defense, but more athletic. They were opportunistic, especially on their two interceptions. One was a tip ball and one was a high throw. Both things that could be an problem for us with the amount of drops/high-throw, tip-balls we have had in the first three games.
  • Their WR Johnson, #9, could be tough. Similar to Lazard/Butler in size and skill set. And he was lining up on the right side quite a bit and was successful over there. That has been the weak side of our pass defense the last couple weeks.
  • When USC was able to get pressure on the Texas' QB Ehlinger, he would get flustered and was prone to make mistakes. That may be a major key in the game for our D.
  • Overall, this is stacking up to be a similar matchup to what we saw with the Iowa game. Our strength, offense, vs their strength, defense. And with two weeks for both teams to prepare, it would seem that both teams will be well scouted and prepared for each other's strengths/weaknesses.

I don't think we will be able to run on them.
I didn't think we would be able to run on Iowa and we did OK. I dont think DM is going to have a lot of trouble running on many teams this season, but we'll see. I agree with the OP...Texas reminded me a little of Iowa. Texas probably has the better defense though, but not by much.

The Longhorns big right offensive tackle got hurt last night. Some in LongHorn Nation say he may be their best player on the team. A huge blow to their already banged up line. Fingers crossed he doesn't play against us.....that could be an opportunity to take advantage of

I think a CBS mock draft had him as the #1 overall player. Also anyone remember former ISU commit Tristan Nickelson? He decommitted to go to Texas and starts for them at tackle.

I have no memory of a Texas o-line that gave up three consecutive sacks like I saw USC do it last night.

I was also not that impressed with any of the PAC 12 teams I have seen this year.

I don't think Texas' defensive front 7 is any better than Iowa, and the Texas o-line is way below Iowa's.

I think we have a good chance.

Their defense looked good last night against a team that was having a ton of success on offense. USC's wide outs looked smaller and much faster/quicker than ours. We will see how they handle big receivers like ours and more of a power back in Montgomery.
I really hope Texas comes out flat after a devastating loss like they had but at the same time I don't expect it.

So far Texas seems like a team that plays up or down to the level of their competition. I expect a tough game that the Cyclone can compete in, and take the next step in the process and close with the win.

Maybe it's different with a new coach (though our experience with him would beg to differ) but Texas in recent history has a nasty habit of playing down to their opponents and playing up to the better ones.

You could say the same for USC this year. The Texas D played out of their minds last night and I'm not sure they bring the same focus into JTS. I don't think texas or their fans look past us due to the competitive games between these teams these last few years but I think UT struggles bringing that same focus into JTS on a Thrusday night. Its should be a close one regardless!

Their O line definitely has some problems. Those guys on the D line are big. They looked a lot better last night than they did against Maryland.

That Texas D may have some similarities to Iowa's....very stout on the front four....but overall team speed and the quality of the DB's on the Texas team is much superior to Iowa. We will have to be patient and have some career performances from a OL, who have been solid so far but unspectacular in the ground game. Can't be dropping so many key passes either, but that one's obvious.

Park is a decisive quarterback. Second guessing in the pocket leads to sacks & turnovers.

No need to attack the middle of Bevo's D. Get Montgomery the ball in space and let him create.
