Quarterback Situation

I think we should speculate on Rhoads after this season. He gets a pass after that abomination last year. It was a perfect storm of crappy football.

He doesn't have happier feet than Richardson, that's for sure. Richardson never stands in there and hits the 2nd or 3rd option. He stares down option 1, and then runs if it isn't there.

All 3 guys have some major weaknesses. Not sure how many games we can win with any of them right now? If Lanning is really still in the running, that means neither Grant or Sam have gotten any better IMO, and that is downright scary.

Ya, I'm not sure how much better Grant and Sam will be able to get. If our line is healthy and plays in the very least well this year we should have a great litmus test for these guys. I still think the obvious starter is Richardson, but I can understand peoples apprehension. Gotta give Sam credit, he started a game with three injuries.

What I really want is for Lanning to get out there on that field and say alright guys this is how its done. I don't care if he runs for 2000 yds and throws for 0 I just want someone that is going to go out there and kick some @ss for once!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was not a Rohach fan last year as he struggled. But the last 2 games he did improve a lot. He made some good plays. I actually like the competition that is taking place. Not sure whether the info is accurate concerning Lanning being the #2 QB. IMO, Rohach is likely the #1. But if Rohach goes down during a game, I would bet that Richardson would likely get the nod because of his previous experience playing as a starter.

No he didn't. The last two games he played two crappy teams that had given up on the season and just wanted it to be over. Anybody could have looked decent at QB those last two games.

Not really. Kansas had won a Big 12 game just before ISU for the first time in a long time. And West Virginia was well on the way to winning the game until we launched a great comeback win. C'mon. That is quite a stretch to say that West Virginia was just going through the motions in that game. Not true at all.

It would have been extremely easy to tank those last 2 games. And Rohach didn't. He played pretty well. And led us to a helluva comeback win at West Virginia.

The Coach who has a contract that runs through 2021 is my guess.

Well yeah, but they were trending and were held accountable and had synergy and stuff like that. :jimlad:

It's kind of strange to me where all this negativity has come from. I thought people were excited about the wins at the end of the year and the Mangino hire, but it's almost like people waited till basketball was over to mourn last football season.

They obviously want to return to the glory days of Gene Chizik. Or even to the last days of Dan McCarney.

I am trying to recall all the signature wins by either of those guys. What were they?

Not necessarily. I'm not discounting actual in-game reps, but all three guys have spent the exact same amount of time in Mangino's system. The lack of improvement would hold true if they were coming back for another season with Mess and his "scheme", but the fact that they're all starting from square one in a new offense works in Lanning's favor...less ground to make up.

Seriously GMan, what part of the this equation do you not get? Go look at his film when he played the last 2 games of 2012 and tell me that 1. SR doesn't make great decisions 2. Tell me his TD/INT ratio in 2012 wasn't incredible for a first year QB, 3. That his running ability is above average for a QB 4. That he was extremely accurate, even in a 25-30 mph wind vs. WV and would have probably won that game if Woody doesn't fumble on the 3.

Actually, I don't get this equation. At the end of 2012, Sam played a good game against Kansas, but they were god awful. He did what he needed to do, but a good game against Kansas does not make one a good QB. Against WVU, yes the wind was bad, but at the end of the day 13/31 accuracy just doesn't cut it. WVU also had a pretty bad defense. Remember, this is the WVU team that gave up 70 to Baylor that year. He does a good job not throwing INTs and not fumbling, but it's about the same ability as Barnett. I think it is a stretch to call him an above average runner. I don't think his running ability is any better than Jantz or Barnett.

What's the difference between 2012 and 2013? 1. His OL was much better in 2012 2. He was HEALTHY in 2012 and was injured in the 1st game of the year in 2013 and tried to play hurt all year 3. His throwing ability was hindered dramatically (it is for any QB) with a bad ankle (try throwing a football with a gimpy ankle and we'll see how accurate you are) 4. He had NO Time in most cases in 2012 to set and throw and when he did 5. His WR's rarely got separation.

I totally agree that his ankle injury impacted his ability to play QB in 2013. While being fully aware of this constraint, I just didn't see anything last year to indicate he will be a good QB.

Sam Richardson, from what I saw in 2012 held a LOT of promise in a very average offense. Not Seneca like but an above average QB in his own right. Give him a good OC, a good OL, a Running game to back him up a little bit, and recovered confidence from last year's debacle...give him a chance. GR also is a coming along nicely and I really don't know which one is best suited for MM and what he wants to do? Those judging ANY of our QB's with last year's offensive line and coordinator situation and blaming the problems on the QB, really do not get football.

A lot of QBs would look good with a good OC, a good OL, a running game, and confidence. I have no doubt Sam is one of those QBs. If we have this, I have no doubt any of our QBs will have success. Also, I understand the issues the offense had and the poor environment Sam was in, but I can only go by what happened on the field. From what I have seen, I would be surprised if he turned out to be good. I would be happy to be wrong, and it's far from impossible from happening, but I'm not expecting it.

SRs record as a starter is 1-10. GRs record as a starter is 2-1. Richardson is too gun shy and seems injury prone. I don't agree that he has a stronger arm than GR either, but he is faster. He probably knows the read option better, but that might not be used as much in 2014. Mangino can make an average QB look great, so we at least have that going for us.

There was no pocket. We had trouble on the interior line and when the middle breaks, the fiedl is cut in half and there are no options, especially when it happens right away.

You don't know what the weaknesses are for each QB either. You don't really know much about football in general and all you do is spread a bunch of drivel about how nothing could ever be good and how any sign at all, whether, it be good or bad, is bad in some other way. If Lanning takes a spot it's not because he's good, everyone else is bad. You do it in every football related topic and it has just gotten old. I don't think I'm the only one who feels that way and I don't think it's a bunch of people who have no questions about this staff and what they are doing. There's a difference between being real and just being baby about every little thing.

Completely agree. Mangino was brought in to install his own offense, and while he of course watched tape of Grant and Sam as part of his evaluations, to him, all 3 players started at the same spot. I don't think he puts much weight on a player's experience in a previous system he was brought in to replace.

I am sure about only one thing with our QB situation this year. With this many QBs, after any loss our second guessing on CF about who should have started will be at all-time record levels.

Joel just needs to study his butt off and the job is his. He has all the physical parts, he just needs to become a counter expert, which is needed on the hot routes and quick hits. If he can get the mental side I don't see how anyone could beat him out.

In the spring game he struggled with accuracy, which was also a problem of his in high school. From what I could tell (granted through a very small body of work) Richardson and Rohach both through better balls as of now. He does have all the physical tools, but if Richardson and Rohach are more accurate I have trouble believing Joel would start, unless they are really confident in his ability and the ability of the o-line to have a zone read heavy offense.

Grant can't even throw a screen pass that is on point, and Sam is here and there as well. At least Lanning can get the ball to them quickly.

Lanning throws the best ball. Rohach missed many receivers downfield in the spring game as well, at least 2 maybe 3. Lanning and Richardson were never allowed to throw ball downfield.
