We are recruiting QBs that not only can throw but can run. He may not quite fit the bill.

Tight end ? Defensive end ? You don't change the position of a person that can throw a 20 yard square out to the side lines (on a rope !).

I'll start by saying that I really admire SDSU's football program. But Austin Sumner should probably look somewhere else. SDSU is so loaded with young, high quality QB's, he would have to be way above exceptional to separate himself from that pack !

Isnt this sort of an oxymoron?:skeptical:

I'm friends with a guy who plays with him, and the rumor is that he's going to ISU, but I wouldn't consider it a fact yet.

It's only an oxymoron until you see SDSU's three freshman QBs. Thomas O'Brien (RFr), Mike Whittier (Fr), and Dustin Lotzer (Fr). O'Brien filled in for a fifth year injured QB and led SDSU to a 24 -14 win over UNI. O'Brien is a "good" runner, but an outstanding passer. I would love to have a Thomas O'Brien on Iowa State's team. You would lose on the QB running game, but gain a whole bunch on the passing side.

From Brandon Valley's quarterfinal game last night against Pierre (SD)..........

The senior Sumner completed 29 of 44 passes for 274 yards and five TDs and one interception. He also ran for 106 yards on 12 carries

Here's the quarterfinal playoff game on Austin:

Class 11AA State Playoffs: Brandon Valley rolls Pierre

In the semi's Austin faces SF Washington, which is current ISU commit, Tom Farniok's team. Maybe two future Cyclones facing off to go to the SD state championship. I'm assuming SF Washington will win, but who knows with Austin playing on the other side. None will beat my former high school Aberdeen Central though.

we had a real good qb from aberdeen, south dakota, once.his name was george amundson. he was probably one of the better qbs that has been atb iowa state.in the early 50's the cyclones had an ornery half back from the jack rabbit state.his name was walt bones.walt owns the bones hereford ranch which is near soiux falls.i do not know if walt is still alive.he would be in his eas\rly or middle eighties by now. i never saw him play, but my oldest brother who is 87 said walt was a real ornery SOB.

we truly need a player and quaterback like him here... QB is such a unique position that utilizes a players all of the speed and agility attributes, arm strength and accuracy- but by far most important is the decision making... think NFL QBs..

No Amundson's on the AC team, but one of Brandon Valley's defeats is to Aberdeen Central. Aberdeen Central has all seniors in their starting lineup. Great defense and their QB was named all esd conference 1st team along with Sumner.

George is a legend around the Aberdeen area and South Dakota for that matter. He still holds the state discuss record and my hs track coach was there the day he did it and said his throw looked like it was never going to come down. Probably a record that will never be broken. Amundson was a once in a lifetime type athlete so I never would even compare Austin to George, but I would compare Austin to Josh Huepel, who was from Aberdeen Central too. Josh of course went on to quarterback the Sooners to the National Championship and was runner up in the Heisman trophy that year. Walter Camp Award winner though I think. Austin has broke every record Josh ever set and that is really saying something because Josh was a hell of a quarterback. Aberdeen Central has had a few greats come out of that high school. Another one would be Taylor Melhaff, All-Big 10 kicker for Wisky.

Funny story about Amundson. My senior year, we were undefeated going to undefeated Yankton in the last regular season game for the ESD title. This was the first time AC was in contention since George was there and the week before we had a team meeting where George met us and spoke to us through a conference call. Talked about his team winning the ESD title at Yankton and how he was beat up the whole game but kept comin at them and won the game. He said he was hit so hard he got up and went into the Yankton huddle and all the Yankton players sent him back to his huddle. At the end of the story he paused and there was silence and then he yelled.....SO KEEP COMIN AT EM AND GIVE THEM HELL EAGLES! Probably the most fired up I've ever been.

This is another true "George Amundson story". When George was at Iowa State, he not only played tailback and quarterback, on the football team; but also was on the track squad. (Held the national high school discus record at the time.) When it was fb season, George usually had a playing weight of 225 to 230. (On a 6'3" frame) During track season, George would be closer to 270. One February evening, I was in the lower level of the old state gym, talking to a friend, Steve Ehlers (of Albert City) who was a high jumper on ISU track squad. Steve had the bar set at 6'3" and was working on his foot steps. George stopped by and we talked for a few minutes. When the conversation wrapped up, George made the comment that he had always wanted to trying high jumping. So he lopes up to highjump bar and clears it.
How many 6'3", 270 pound guys do you know that can "jump" their height !

I think Johnny Majors once said George Amundsom was the best athlete he ever coached. Sumners mom is from Iowa and his grandparents live about 125 miles north of Ames if that makes any difference in the recruiting.

In Minnesota? Or right on the border?

No disrespect, but if he can't separate himself from the other QBs at SDSU, he probably shouldn't go to Iowa State or any BCS team. (just saying)

No disrespect, but RFr QB Thomas O'Brien (Winona, Mn) would likely be the starting QB at the U. of Minn. if he had gone that direction instead of to SDSU. In HS career, passed for 5,505 yards and 69 TD's.
Mike Whittier (Fr QB) from St. Louis, Mo. originally committed to the Air Force Academy. But opted out because he wants to pursue a degree in medicine (MD). In HS career, passed for 6,151 yards, and 57 TD's, and rushed for 20 TD's.

SDSU has a solid program. Do not doubt that those QB's are talented and I know that they are because I've been to a few Jacks games this year, but Sumner is a whole other level of talented and would surely start for the Jacks. I think he would give Tiller a run for his money when Austen leaves. And I REALLY think Tiller is going to be a good QB for us. Sumner is just a really special QB and I think if we miss on him he will be successful where ever he goes.
