Pride Month

Fun story. One of my best friends from college came out our last semester in Ames. Know one had any clue, he'd had a GF for the better part of the previous year among other things. Fast forward to now he's married to a great guy and one of their friends in the gay community is a former O-Lineman from the McCarney days at ISU.

This is an awesome doc everyone should watch. NYC drag in the 80s. A huge competition between various “houses.”It’s also were Madonna stole Vogue.

Paris is Burning should honestly be required viewing for everyone. Also there is a show on HBO Max called Legendary which is a contest show putting current ‘houses’ like this against each other. First season is flipping amazing. Second season is meh. So far third season is not great. But first is so so so great.

And FYI, if you've never been to a Pride Parade in a major city, it's something you should do once. For a city like Minneapolis, we have one of the largest Pride Parades in the country where anywhere from 500,000 to 800,000 people line Hennepin Ave downtown. And it is a party. We tailgate like we do at Jack Trice, getting to our spot at 8:00 am and are there all day.
Or even if you're in a smaller community, there might be events worth checking out. There's a Pride Fest in Stevens Point (pop. ~27k) every year now that's pretty solid, and there's a bar in Wisconsin Rapids (pop. ~19k) about 25 minutes away that hosts an annual drag show during Pride Month; they typically get performers from all over the state, and it's entertaining as hell.

Going to the inaugural pride celebration and river parade on the 18th.

It’s a new event here. Really looking forward to it.

For those of you in the area, it’s at the river theater at La Villita

They doing it strictly on the river or a dry parade? Just wondering.

The performances will be at the river walk theater, the parade is on the river.

Here’s the link.

For the record, it's a running joke on how corporations/brands use Pride Month to make and sell Pride-themed goods, and announce everywhere they can how supportive they are...then July 1 hits and it's silence the rest of the year. Some companies truly are great at supporting the community...others are cringey. And while some of what brands are doing is just so they aren't caught in the crosshairs of NOT showing support, most are genuine.

But there is also something called knowing your audience. Some brands and their publicity/posts during Pride are so cringey.

The US Marine Corp posted a tweet yesterday, which I find amazing and am glad they posting something. It's great to see the military do this. But their post was somehow able to piss off both the LGBTQIA+ community AND homophobes at the same time. That is impressive. Why rainbow BULLETS? Why not a rainbow camo helmet? Again, glad they did something but they should have consulted with some gays before post hahah.

Another was the city of Toronto. Nothing says 'you're an integral part of our city!' like trash. (Image attached)

Budweiser and Queens, NY had what they thought was a good ad...but it really comes off badly (see attached)

Feel the same about women's day, Black history month, Asian history.....it's all for show. I enjoyed the twitter user who showed the pay gap for women at companies who tweeted for women's day. Show the change you're actually making, policies you implement, charities you support or say nothing at all.

Had a good time at Wings Over Iowa put on in part by the National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA). Great event and awesome that they chose Cedar Rapids for the inaugural event as there are many other likely more friendly locales. I spoke to the president before we left (I was an exhibitor) and he said they were very welcomed in the community and the weekend of activities went great

There were several folks in my rural Iowa high school that waited to come out until after high school.

Sadly there are still people out there with reminders as to why they waited.

I wasn't out in high school. I wasn't even out until a few years after college. Growing up in a small town in Iowa waiting was just easier for me.
