Preseason AP Poll ISU Ranked 5th

Seems about right. On paper, this is the best Iowa State team I've ever seen so it's time to see it in action. Super excited to see if they can handle the hype and I think they will because the core has the experience now. Final 4 or bust IMO. The Big 12 is going to be a juggernaut with Arizona added in now so the Clones will have their work cut out for them.

Kind of crazy to see UConn at 3 after all they've lost but Hurley is creating a machine in Storrs.
Rutgers is a team I'm really intrigued by with Bailey and Harper. Kind of crazy to see two top 3 recruits commit to Rutgers but I love it as a guy who lives in the area. Nice to see the lesser schools snag some top recruits.

How TF is the B2B champ not #1 to start the season????

Hurley is going to LOVE seeing that
They lost a lot of talent from last season. It's a testament to Hurley that they're preseason ranked 3 despite all that.

Karaban, Diarra, Aidan Mahaney (from St Mary's), two five star freshman... AND THEY ARE B2B CHAMPS with the best current MBB coach..

Not mad at you, just saying they should be #1 until they lose a game or two

They should be #1 until proven otherwise, by, well, us.
I would love to end up facing them in the Maui Invitational and stomp them. That tournament is going to be insane. A ton of good squads and a good early season test for us. We may potentially have to play Auburn, then UNC, then UConn to win it. That's as brutal as it gets.

Season is gonna be a meat grinder. Hopefully we stay healthy.
Here is hoping to avoid the injury bug. At the same time, we may have the kind of depth that allows us to cover any potential injuries better than we ever have anytime that I can remember.

That isn't how it works. If they had the same players, they would be #1. Frankly, they are ranked too high and that is because of the last two years. to me they are more of a top 15-20 team not top 5.

You are just naming guys. Karaban is a good player. Diarra is a role player. Mahaney overrated. And their Freshman aren't ready made guys like Castle was last year and I believe they only have one five star Freshman in McNeely who is a good shooter but I think will struggle at times this year against athletes and will struggle to defend. I also don't think Hurley is the best MBB coach. I think he brought in a great assistant that installed an amazing offensive system and then they had the horses to run it. I mean the amount of talent they have had on their team the past two years is pretty crazy.

$20 to We Will that UCONN finishes above KU AND Alabama in the final AP Poll..

Deal?

Check out this voter's Iowa State comment.
Dumb. First off, their statement is not accurate, only four of our first 10 games are against teams ranked 301+ in KenPom.

These things are easy to twist into whoever you want to look better. For example, I'll make ISU look good: assuming the higher-ranked teams advance in the holiday tourneys, five of our first 10 games are against teams ranked #3-33 in KenPom, and one of them is on the road. Gonzaga only plays three games out of their first 10 against opponents ranked higher than #39, and none of them are on the road.

Now let's do conference games SOS!

The only reason they are as high as #3 is on the back of reputation and Hurley's coaching. You don't get to be ranked #1 this year because of what was accomplished last year when 4 of the top 5 players from that team are gone. From a pure roster and proven players point they aren't a top 5 roster today. Very well could be though by year end.

In a preseason poll - where literally no one has seen ANY of these teams actually play, and literally ALL we have to go off-of is "what happened last year" and "hype" and "recruiting rankings" - it makes perfect sense that UConn should absolutely be ranked in the top 5, maybe even #1. Hell, they have dominated college basketball for 2 straight years with 2 different rosters and 'some' returning production sprinkled in.

To be clear - preseason rankings are among the single most stupid things in human history - but based on every bit of information we have, UConn deserves every single benefit of the doubt this preseason.

Edit: Sorry, still chuckling - "...you don't get to be ranked #1 this year because of what was accomplished last year..."

Who gets to be ranked #1 in the preseason!?

On paper by general talent evaluations (not fit to a program which imo TJ and staff are elite at) I'm not even sure if they'd be in the conversation for best returning groups.

That's not a slight on the players; the way they've played and how well they've played together has been among the best.

And personally I refuse to use the Final Four as a standard. It's a long season and the NCAA tournament is too fickle to just expect it.

Excited to get the first few previews of the group here in about 3 weeks.
