I decided I could tolerate Freeman with the sheepish look he had when he banked in a free throw.

Seemed like they couldn’t hit shots late cause they had no legs for the threes. Fran did not seem to leave subs in very long. Either not much depth or depth he doesn’t trust.
Freeman would be a real problem if he could play 4 next to a serviceable 5.

Some of you historians enlighten me. When was the last time the Clones won in Carver and Kinnick in the same year? I am titillated and the sun will shine in glory today on the Cyclone State. I luxuriate knowing that any Hawkeye fan that opens their mouth until September’25 will get a smirk from me and they’ll know.

Exorcized some demons. We shot more FT's in the last 30 seconds than first 39:30 of the game. They let Dix and Harding just grab all night. KG got fouled twice on the play they reviewed.

Yeah I thought we were toast because the in the beginning of the second half they were calling so many ticky tack fouls on us but letting Iowa hand check and grab us. So getting them into the bonus early was like a free 2 points every time they fouled.

That is a staple of a Fran coached team. Have your guards do hesitation dribbling until the opposition reaches in for a quick foul - repeat until in bonus (hopefully in by the 10 minute mark). The free throw line is a major scoring component of any good hawkeye team.

Finally got to watch this morning.

1. That was Iowa's ultra-focused, hot shooting, all out effort and it wasn't good enough to beat us on their own court, on an off night for us.
2. We have four certified stars (I've been corrected, it is 5 with Milan) in Gilbert, Lipsey, Jones and Jefferson, and seven that are basically interchangeable starter-level guys.
3. Lipsey was absolutely everywhere. I didn't count how many possessions he gained or saved with his hustle, but it was A LOT.
4. Guys never looked the least bit rattled.
5. I'm guessing that this will be a low Q1 or high Q2 by the end of the year, making 4 potential Q1 games (N-Auburn, N-Dayton, H-Marquette, A-Iowa) in the first 9. MUCH better shape from the non-con than we were last year.

Random stuff from the stands:
  • If you take the 3 sections of students out of the equation (they showed up), I would say Cyclone fans made up about 3/8 of the crowd. Just a wild-ass guess based on shirt colors in the seats, but there were A LOT of Cyclone fans there. I think the area we were in was more cardinal than black.
  • It doesn't seem like Iowa basketball attracts the mouth-breathing, drunken morons like Iowa football -- everything was pretty chill.
  • I hadn't been in that hole in the ground for a long time, and then it was for wrestling. If you're sitting above half-way up, it's tough to find a clear view to a scoreboard for the score and player stats.
  • Maybe Hilton does this now, too -- I sadly haven't been in quite a while -- but every timeout had some goofy crap going on, like shooting contests, stuff tossed up into the seats, dance cams, etc. It felt like a minor-league baseball game. Of course, I suppose when you're grasping at straws to try to get people to come to the games...
I'd show up for Fran wrestling a bear.

Agree with all points above! If Colorado (not including beating us) can string some games together there's a chance that could be Q1 as well when its all said and done.

I mentioned this at some point this week, but I thought Iowa State on a grading scale is an A and Iowa is a C.
(ISU is probably a 1-2 seed, Iowa is probably a 7-10 seed/bubble)

Iowa needed an A+ game to win and they IMO they probably played A / A-.
We played OK for most of the game but then turned it on in the last 5 mins.

That makes me feel much better about things knowing we can take someones A game and still come out on top on the road.

reminds me a lot of what Kansas and Duke do consistently every year when they get everyone's A Game and still find ways to win.

The team that looked like they are used to winning, won. Not going to knock the Hawkeyes tonight because they looked pretty good, and executed their offense well. ISU looked more experienced.
And bigger, stronger, better conditioned, better coached, etc... Iowa State blows them out by 30 @ Hilton. Iowa was shooting out of their behinds for the first 30 minutes.

The biggest reason that they are soft on the boards is because they are undersized at just about every position. They are playing Sandfort at the 4, which can be a mismatch offensively, but he's not going to hold up on defense against true 4's and he's definitely not going to rebound like most 4's can. The problem is, if he plays the 3, he's going to pile up the fouls because he can't guard someone like Curtis Jones. Momcilivic has the same issues, but ISU is deep enough that we can sub him out and put in a better matchup. Iowa is not.

That said, I do think that they have a decent team. Those guys have some skill and they aren't going to run into many teams as talented as ISU 1-10. I feel like they are likely an NCAA tourney team and could possibly win a game if they get the right matchup and they're hitting shots.
EIU is a border line tournament team at best, the B10 is not a very good conference in BB so that will help them. They have the same issues they always have with Mad Fran as a coach, when they hit their shots they can beat anybody, but they also go through stretches like last night where they cannot buy a basket and it will kill them. They hit 9 3-point shots in the 1st half and only 2 the second half. There style is fun to watch when its clicking, but not strong enough to advance once they get to tournament play, plus Fran is a choker.

He's an x factor. Defense specialist. Shot maker. Cabel Grill x's 10
Such a great role for Heise. This team fits so well right now. We needed Grill to hit 3+ threes a night just to get into the 60s.

Heise just needs to show his offense enough that defenses have to stay honest while he’s out there. Such a luxury to be able to run out a “defensive” line up to close out games and not really miss a beat offensively.

Feels weird being the big dog and every one is going to give us their best shot. Hawkeye were so fired up for this game and our guys seemed to take it as just another road game. Which I am fine with. Our guys just kept their composure (Unlike me, I lost my composure several times) and took them down. Being ranked 3rd we are going to get everyone's top shot. Better get used to this feeling. Ill be able to handle it better with no more games against Iowa. I just didn't want to lose to those dorks.

he didn't make that many adjustments outside of not playing a certain combination of players together, (someone posted it earlier either in this thread or another), and just grinding them into exhaustion. the rest took care of itself.
The real reason Iowa was exhausted was from all of their in game celebrations. How do you expect them to keep the same energy level when you gotta celebrate that much.
