Pollard On Student Section

I think they need to find a way to keep Dance Marathon and home games at different times. It would be beneficial for both events and there is really no reason for them to be the same day.

Same with the All-State Music Festival in November, although the dates of that and Dance Marathon are set much further in advance than the athletics calendars, putting the onus on JP to avoid home games for those dates.

And I know at least a couple die hard fans who were not at the game today. They won't miss another game all year. They were at dance marathon. It's obviously a pretty good cause, it's just bad planning.

I think the line thing plays into it as well. KU tickets were going for $60 or more last year, this year they were going for half that or even less because people don't want to stand in line for 4 hours to just get in. That probably made the casual fans less likely to come today. Add that on to the losing streak.

Obviously DM is a much better excuse, but I think those are the reasons.

Doesn't the Big 12 schedule the games and times though? I think something like DM could be moved back/forward a week if it was the same time as a game with like 8 months notice. And it would be better for the event as well.

The Big 12 isn't going to schedule around student group activities.

*Big 12 basketball schedule was released in August
*Dance Marathon is probably scheduled as far out in advance as the Memorial Union allows, which is (I think) 5 years

This is just one example but for an event that uses the entire building with dozens of reservable rooms, they can't just pop in in September and say "Looks like there's a basketball game so we want to switch dates."

The overall point is that athletics should be more cognizant of conflicts, since their schedules are generally determined much later than the other conflicting events are.

I am genuinely curious how much input the member schools have in creating the schedules. It seems to me like there would be a few dates at most that ISU would want to avoid home games on each basketball season, and one or maybe two Saturdays each football season.

Whatever... JP needs to get off the twitter... It make him look like a whiny brat... Some things don't need to be said.

He thanked the student fans that showed up. That's not whiny. If you can't stand the heat get off yo *** and go to the game. Two top 25 teams going head to head and I'm too ******* lazy to get out of bed before noon. Who's whiny again?

What really sucks is if you have a family of 4 that you are dying to get to a game and you can't find tickets. Then when you do some guy wants $200 for them....then you look up on TV and both ends of Hilton are empty. I mean, good grief...

Yeah if they are scheduling that early then the 6 months notice you get is obviously not enough.

And I am also curious, but I seriously doubt we would be allowed to reschedule or avoid a weekend for a student event. It just is what it is at that point if it is necessary to schedule DM 5 years in advance.

That's a good point.
There are plenty of people that will use the tickets if students don't want to use them.

I agree, that stinks, but today and most conference games the last couple of years only one end is empty and that is the student upper deck.

After reading this thread I think its funny that there are still some that think the Dance Marathon was the reason for the students not showing up today. I saw open up at least 1 end of the balcony to non students. They wouldn't even notice

Maybe what they should do is start selling tickets to the general public to fill the empty student seats like 15 minutes before tip. Of course, make an announcement to students in the Daily and by email or whatever that they need to be in their seats by 15 minutes before tip-off, or whatever. Why not? Even if you only sold a few hundred extra tickets, it would make some extra money, and make the building look more full.

DM was not the only reason but it certainly played a part.

And for those that say we should move events on campus to accommodate athletics get over yourself and out from under your rock.

And who in Ames is going to show up on 15 minutes notice? I would, but they would lose the other seat I was going to purchase.
