If 60,000 people who attend/want to attend a FB game, donated an additional $500, the shortfall would be taken care of.

60,000 * $500 = $30,000,000

Yes, but that's sort a Utopian view of philanthropy- it doesn't work like that, especially in the current environment. Heck, the old 80/20 adage where 80% of your fundraising dollars come from 20% of your donor base is being challenged. It's closer to 90/10 with fewer low to mid-level donors.

I'm sure they do, but I guess that's my point.. there's no way that stuff is happening this year, whether there's money to run the building or not. Maybe that's a wrong assumption on my part.

I know that there are dance companies who are doing routines to prep for competition, but I don't know enough about it to know if there actually will be any!

I think the mistake JP made was being too aggressive with the 25k figure. Just from an optics standpoint with Ames having a large amount of cases, that was an issue. Had they gone with 10-15k instead and % wise would have been in line with other schools in the conference, I don't think you would have seen the blowback from the public.

25K was aggressive, but Jamie also stated that he realistically thought the number may drop to about 20K after the plan was announced and seating assignments were sent out. I think even if he went with 1/2 season tickets and had 25K/2 for each game there would be many that would still object. I'm sure there is a reason he picked the number he did. They did a lot of work to get ready including reseating all 25K to maximize social distancing.

We'll know JP is serious if he gets rid of mens and womens track and field. My guess is he'd tear down CY Stephens and build a casino there before that happens though. :)

Track is one of the most illogical sports to get rid of though as you would essentially be cutting 4 sports as many of the athletes are both indoor and outdoor participants. That would make us non compliant to be in the Big 12 with too few teams.

Edit: sorry non compliant to be FBS and on the cusp of Div 1.

JP just needs to completely sell out for a few years and put up tons of ads all over the field and in the stands.......

I've heard the NFL is putting up tarps over the seats and selling ad space on them.... so why not do that this year like this......

For sure, its a very pie in the sky idea. The numbers surprised me, thats mainly why I posted it.

Performing arts under athletics tops the dumb scale for me. And what sports? Can only drop 2 to meet D1 requirement and then you getta deal with Title 9 so this will be interesting

See you golf, it's been fun.

Seems he could make Schemann into a casino, less expensively and quicker to generate revenue. All could stop on the way to Bball game and drop a few hundred in slot machines.:oops: and have a few cocktails!! Lots of rooms and open spaces.

If sports were a 'reward' we would not be playing.
Sports (football mainly) is the economic lifeline to keeping ISU financially stable... and now have to deal with the consequences... there certainly was some middle ground here.

ISU Athletics? Of course.

Iowa State University of Science and Technology? Not remotely close. Tuition, fees and state appropriations are something like $750 million. Throw in non-athletic donations and of course research dollars and non-athletics revenues dwarf athletics.

People that are big college sports fans understand that CFB is big business. However, sports fans also drastically overstate the financial importance of sports to a big state university like ISU. This is why you see Presidents and Chancellors involved in these decisions, and why many of them are erring on the side of caution.

One reason and one reason only that the AD was "gifted" CY Stephens...$$$$$$. With the state gutting school support, the only source of funds for CY was raising more fees on the students or the athletic department, who before COVID, had some $'s that actually could be used for CY.

Many decisions that made sense before COVID are now turning into grenades.

I'm sure Jaime would be happy to give management of it back.

If we can't have fans at football games outdoors, there is no way fans will be at basketball games. Eliminating sports doesn't really generate much immediate relief. Ticket prices for all events will likely need to go up next year. That will be the one way to get cash back in the department. Covid sucks.

Would you have rather he did what Barta did? Two minute talk on the sports they were cutting and then leave to have your assistant field all the questions from athletes that just found out their sport was axed? At least JP lets us know what is going on. Anyone here any Barta comments on anything lately? (insert crickets chirping).

His letter provides "several" options, not all options being looked at.

It begs the question, why weren't all the options being looked at discussed? I don't pretend to have the answer but it does feel like the most controversial options were provided to generate a reaction.

But you are discounting how valuable having sports, and more important successfull sports, is to the university in terms of enrollment numbers and overall name recognition of the university. Sports programs are worth FAR more than budget numbers in terms of advertising for your university.

In this situation, you plan for the worst. If it turns out better, then good. Hope is not a plan.

I definitely agree. By the same token, they will find out that it's easy to shut things down, but hard to start things back up.

So a GOFUNDME won't work? I just don't see how you cannot issue some sort of debt at a decent rate with a maturity out there ways and not be able to pay that off over time.
