Pollard Details Recommended Cuts

Nice letter Jamie. This is designed to look for possible donors to support Stephens and potentially influence public opinion towards fans in October.

that was my take when reading this as well and I don’t have a problem with the letter. Seems to me like he’s trying every avenue he can to keep things running while being open about the circumstances and I appreciate that

I've had close to 50% of my work get infected and test positive recently. None of them had symptoms worse that a common cold. Half of the infected had none at all and just got tested because it was going through. Quite a few of them are in their 50s and 60s. Close to 40% of covid deaths across the U.S. have come from nusing homes, a place where the majority of people die within a year. Hospital beds in Ames, Iowa City, Des Moines where the hot spots are are still well below capacity. But you have the same morons like Alarson banging on that drumb that things can't be worked back to normal until a vaccine.

Still trying to downplay it I see. Nice work!

I assume you are donating the cost of the 2020 football tickets to the AD to help with this shortfall and help those hundreds of lives?

I am.

I have not made up my mind yet. I am not happy about not allowing fans to games. I am not happy that after 25 years of going to games and supporting some bad teams, I cannot go and support would could be one best teams in school history, maybe a once in a lifetime team.

Sucky choices all-around...
1. Bring 35,000 students back and spread COVID, all but guaranteeing no fans at the first or subsequent games, and causing the potential elimination of sports, jobs, and performing arts. But, the university gets vital tuition dollars and keeps ISU's academic standards stable.
2. Keep classes 100% remote...no students on campus, fans are likely at the first and subsequent games, no sports cut and performing arts continues, but the academic side of the house suffers from significant tuition loss and local business loss, professors and staff laid off, further erosion in ISU's academic standings.

Honestly, killing a couple of sports (hopefully temporary), some jobs cut, and possible performing arts reductions, is the right choice if they can't get fans in a stadium.

By the way, while the big schools are being looked at as big COVID spreaders, don't forget the vast majority of elementary, middle, and high schools are carrying on like it is normal business out there...COVID was going to spike regardless.

To think that CY Stephens needs nearly $50 million in improvements just to be up to code basically...... one would think that it has been horribly mismanaged? Who does that fall under again.... oh yeah..... JP.

I'm not saying he could have done better.... but don't be blaming it on Covid... it has been neglected far too long if it needs that much improvement done to it.

No Fans for Football = Big Cuts

1. Layoffs and/or additional payroll reductions
2. Eliminating sports
3. Closing C.Y. Stephens’ Auditorium

Biggest questions are about eliminating sports. D1 requires 14 sports, and state 7 mens/7 womens or 6 mens/8 womens split is allowed.

Is indoor and outdoor track and field considered 2 sports or are they combined? If they are combined, we currently have 6 mens and 10 womens.

Also, can't ax womens scholarships without doing the same to the mens total due to Title 9. What options would Pollard even have?

Men's golf and women's tennis??? Womens swimming and diving?

Another classic case of clonedude not knowing all the details and assuming. Mismanaged by JP is not the case here. CY needs a lot of work to make it ADA compliant. A lot of those codes weren't in place when CY was built but if you start to modify or remodel CY, you aren't grandfathered in anymore and are required to upgrade everything to be ADA compliant. Once you start doing that then you need to meet the new building codes as well, its a chain reaction. That is a significant cost. The stage system also needs updated, that's very expensive. Plus, JP only took it over a year ago - can't blame not being up to code on him.

Athletics has had management duties of Stephens for one year. Deferred maintenance was put off for far too long, but not by the AD.

No.... Covid is going to affect millions of lives for years to come..... not just not having fans at sporting events. Wake up! Millions of people are already suffering in their lives.... or dead...... from this virus. None of this is new folks. Did you really think universities and sports teams would be exempt from all of this??

People are losing their jobs, their chance at college over the fear of COVID. Again if you are healthy your have a 99.95% chance of living and probably wont show sings. Look at the data 89% of deaths in Iowa are in people over 60 and 50% are in people over 80. Over 60% of the deaths in Iowa are people in nursing homes. The freak out over this has to stop.

Couldn't there be a lot more events held at both CY Stephens and Hilton? Seems like they just sit empty a large portion of the time.

ISU offers 18 sports right now (7 M, 11 F).

Women's sports can be cut without cutting men's sports. "Number of sports" isn't the mark; it's a matter of scholarship count and participation relative to the percentages of male/female in the overall student body (56.4% male as of last fall). ISU could cut two particular women's sports and still be almost spot on with the student ratio.

Thanks for that info.... I didn't realize that.

Back to the topic at hand..... did everyone really think that the entire U.S. would be hit extremely hard by this pandemic..... but ISU sports wouldn't?

One reason and one reason only that the AD was "gifted" CY Stephens...$$$$$$. With the state gutting school support, the only source of funds for CY was raising more fees on the students or the athletic department, who before COVID, had some $'s that actually could be used for CY.

Many decisions that made sense before COVID are now turning into grenades.
