Pollard being arrogant over the years

We are all arrogant sometimes. The guy has done more for Iowa State athletics than anyone in my lifetime. He has some failed coaching hires but find me one athletic program that has hit on every hire. I mean let’s give TJ a chance before we declare him a bad hire. I would rather have gone a different direction but geesh. He is our coach now so let’s do it and quit making stupid threads.

Exactly. I would be pissed if there wasn't some arrogance.

Can you imagine:

"Hello CyclONEnation. I am hear to tell you that I hope we can figure out what to do with this mess of a basketball program. I may need some help. I am just an accountant and I have to watch my heart. Therefore, I am going to come up with a list of 10 candidates. We will have open voting on Cyclonefanatic this weekend (Premium members get 2 votes). I think this is the only fair way to select a new coach and I realize that most of the posters on Cyclone Fanatic know much more than I do about fielding a basketball program. Don't read to much into me getting lucky with football. Forever True and Nervous - JP"

Ok, since this silly thread is already going, I have a question.
It's asserted JP is hiring his "buddy". Are we sure about that? There's a big difference between identifying someone you want to work with and developing that relationship over time, and being buddies. I suspect it's the former, not the latter, but I don't know. Does anyone?

The "buddy" part of the narrative is due to if anyone else had TJ's resume, they wouldn't be considered for this position.

His results as a head coach are lackluster, and no one is really viewing him as an up-and-comer outside of Ames.

From the Las Vegas review journal about a TJ move to ISU:

"It would have more to do with Otzelberger's two stints as a assistant coach in Ames and these relationships he and his wife Alison built there than anything that has transpired at UNLV.

He's 29-30 overall and 20-16 in the Mountain West. You're not landing many gigs, much less in the Big 12 off of that."

So let's hope if he is the hire he does well. Or the brain dead stamp won't be on those who are reluctant.

TJ is a "right way" coach and he was never a good fit at UNLV. He came in and cleaned house so using a two year window to say whether he's a good coach or not is incredibly narrow sighted. The problem with UNLV fans and their media is that they fail to understand that unless the program is dirty they are a average to below average team. TJ isn't going to run that kind of program.

Can we all agree? Some of his big moves had created success.. dresser,,Campbell, hoiberg.. others others are failures.. greg. Prohm, Kevin Jackson, chizik, maybe tj is tbd..

I don't really follow other schools too closely, can you give some comparison to other schools, in our range of middle to bottom of the conference historically and show how someone is doing better? Every hire isn't going to be a home run, it's just not possible.

If you went to ISU in the early 90s like I did, you realize the AD is more than just hiring and firing coaches. In fact, I'd say that's just a small part of their job. If you went to ISU when I did, you'd also realize JP has a tome to be arrogant about. The facilities improvements alone are enough to hang his hat on imo. Campbell certainly has been a huge home run, but things were improving quite well before Campbell got here, so far, he's just the home run shot every AD would give their left nut for.

And imo, a lot of what Campbell is doing here is a direct result of the base that JP put in place. JP got the fan base excited about football, borderline crazy for it, at a time when we were doing better historically, but still not doing great in terms of better programs in the league.

Personally, I'll give JP a pass on a few bad hires. It's hard to imagine losing him to another school. He really has done wonders for this school.

I try to stay away from stuff like this, but the last couple of days has been mind numbing. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, but for **** sake folks. All anyone does is *****. It doesn’t matter what happens. Just ***** about it.

Did you break into Gary VandeBarta's computer and get that statement?

Can somebody please explain to me why some people here believe that because firing Prohm was a foregone conclusion, this somehow means that Pollard has already interviewed several candidates for the position? An explanation with some reality to it?

I can understand doing some leg work on JP's preferred candidates for sure. Maybe even contacting agents to see if some are interested. But actively hiring somebody who is presumably in the middle of their basketball coaching job, before you even fire the guy you have working for you? I can't imagine any coach would take that risk. Look at the chaos that came just from mutual interest in TJ and him saying "no comment" to a reporter's question.

Do you honestly believe that Prohm was just let go? JP and Prohm have had numerous conversations over the last several weeks. He knew he was gone but just didn't make a production out of it.

I'm good friends with a P5 AD who told me every director has a list of candidates in his pocket at all times. JP may have internally selected TJO months ago. No need then to do the coaching search/search firm thingy should that be the case. But at this point, looking from outside, no one but the principals knows, and they're certainly not posting here.

Hiring coaches is AKIN to drafting in the 1st round of the NFL. There will be a some hits and misses.... but they all seem good at the time. Take a deep breath everyone... time will tell.

I do not think arrogant is the right word. I think he is a good leader and can be thin skinned. I do not think he takes criticism too well. But, I think he has very good for ISU. I think almost all of his hires looked good on paper at the time they were made. Obviously, they did not all pan out. I think his batting average is respectable for our institution.

Oh come on. TJ may very well end up being a great coach.

But no great recruiter is some saint.

Wonder what your boss feels about his decision to hire you.... ;)

I get that it's St Patrick's day but you are all over the road. I think you should park the keyboard in the garage and come back tomorrow and start over.
