Players Era

Why have a tiebreaker of "head to head?" None of the 2-0 teams have played each other, else one of them would have a loss. It seems like it would be impossible for anything to be determined by "head to head."

Also, is the plus/minus a total point differential or an average point differential? They explicitly use the word "total" for points scored and points allowed.

Seriously, did nobody ask their teenage kid to run a sample scenario to see how this would work (or not work)?

From SB Nation:
  • 1) Overall record
  • 2) Head-to-Head
  • 3) Plus/Minus Tiebreaker with maximum of 20 points
  • 4) Total Points Scored
  • 5) Total Points Allowed
  • 6) AP Poll ranking

And it kind of happened 2 years in a row with Auburn last year.

and yet last year's bothers me a whole lot less because at least last year we lost that game and suffered the consequences... but this year we won the game and may get the shaft anyway.

According to Grok, pods matter. Although I have seen Grok be wrong more than right, and I have seen it post the answer to the same question with opposite answers multiple times on other things. So
The PE website makes it seem like it doesn’t matter either.

You can click the tabs for each pod though too. they have overall and the 2 pods broken down. So it seems it all is just to confuse.

The pods do matter from what I have read.
4 teams got a loss yesterday, so ISU has to jump 2 of Michigan, Auburn, Baylor.
  • Michigan plays Auburn - so will jump one of those for sure on record.
  • Baylor getting whipped rn. They have to WIN by 13, and are down 18 at the 12 minute mark.
So 2nd in the pod seems assured. To get first, Auburn has to beat Michigan, but by less than 8. That's less assured.

The other side has more teams, and too many possible outcomes to math out at this time for me.

What . . . The . . . Frick!?

I'm not a detailed basketball person. I'm a Cyclone and love our guys. I have zero - none - interest in a tourney setup this way. W-L is all I'm interested in.

So, I ask, why do people put together such "odd" mathematical formulas (formulae?) to determine sports outcomes?

Not necessarily -- they also have tabs for MGM Grand Garden Arena and Michelob ULTRA Arena, and there aren't really any reason for those to exist unless they're picking the pod winners for the championship game. The overall standings are relevant either way for the consolation matchups.

To me 2 games is not enough to figure out this type of format.
It should be 3 games and pods, then the tie breakers would work better.

Otherwise you really need to have a full on real tournament with an actual bracket with seeds etc.

But actually having the said rules posted on the official page would really help the confusion too.

While winning or playing for the championship would be great, the biggest takeaway from this tournament is how well this team can compete vs NCAA caliber teams. And so far they have passed with flying colors.
Yea, I am not sure I want Houston or Tennessee right now. Not that we couldn't hang with them but those games would be SO physical. I think we have established our presence, one of the other 4 would still be a nice Quad 1 game most likely.

So the best way to ensure a spot in the 3rd place game would be for Houston to win by less than 15? That would put the business of pods to bed and a chance to see Kansas a bit early this year.

Next year it expands to 32 teams and more games to play for each team. I think from what I've gathered, it will be laid out like a soccer tournament; with pods, then knock out rounds.

I think there’s guaranteed to by 5 2-0 teams.

ISU (+19) and Kansas (+21)

Then
Houston / Tennessee winner
Michigan / Auburn winner
Gonzaga / Maryland winner

Everyone else has a loss.
I think best for ISU is
Houston beats Tenn by 14 or less (if Tenn wins, they jump ISU)
Auburn beats Mich by 7 or less (if Michigan wins they jump ISU)
Gonzaga beats Maryland by 8 or less (I can't see MD beating Zaga)

I think we will get pushed to the 3rd place game if we make top 4, but we are ranked and KU is not so that may bump us above them. If SJ hadn't gotten that last second putback, I think we are above KU without doubt.

I think Gonzaga will make championship and winner of Auburn/Mich, unless Houston pulls away and wins by 15+.

I get it, take the money. 100%. Secondly, take the experience of playing these games this early.

But this format is very, very dumb. They will need to look at it going forward, hopefully.

Kansas beats to “meh” ACC teams in ND and Syracuse and gets a chance at the title?

We’ve got to bring in KenPom or T-Rank analytics for some sort of guidance on who plays who.
