Phillip Bates

because i played with arnaud and i dont know many ppl who do have the heart he does

How can you possibly quantify the amount of heart somebody has? Furthermore, how do you know he has more than Bates? You've never played with him.

As far as Bates staying committed to us, it absolutely wouldn't happen if this Brantley kid came along. The two reasons Bates committed to ISU were because we were the first to come along and because we were willing to give him a shot at QB. He wouldn't get a shot.

And last of all, Arnaud did get rave reviews in the summer....I don't know if he was an early graduate, but I seem to remember that he came earlier than the average kid and was getting praise for being with the team so early.

Don't gvie up on Arnald this kid can develope in to a major big time QB has all the tools!!

If not for talent, Arnaud has the extra year of college football experience. Granted, the playing field will be leveled a bit since Chizik brings a brand new system. I'd say if Bates comes, let him compete for the starting QB job in 2 years and if he doesn't pan out, slide him to safety where he'll have a better chance of making it to the NFL working out of Chizik's system. A can't-lose scenario for Bates...

Sorry i didnt mean to say spring practice. It was summer and fall that he was getting rave reviews. He was even number 2 on the depth chart and if meyer went down for a substantial amount of time he would have been the guy. I think he will be a legit big time qb in college football

Comparing Bates and Arnaud is silly. Neither has taken a D1 snap.

I agree, this is silly. Lets hope we can get Bates here and then we will let Arnaud and Bates compete head to head in practice until once emerges as the starter. I wouldn't be surprised if whoever isn't starter plays another position a la Austin Flynn.

Why is everybody ceding the job to Bret Meyer for the 2007 season? With a new coach and presumably a new system, I'd hope the battle for the QB position is wide-open as of right now.

I'm sorry people, but the pre-season All Big XII QB selection didn't perform anywhere near his hype or sophomore year heroics. IMO, he back-slid in epic proportions. I know there were other contributing factors (OL play, lack of running game, etc.), but Meyer was not good by any measure.

I hear what you are saying, but it seems that it would take a very special player to unseat a 3 year starter at the QB position. Even if his Jr. year was less than expected.

Meyer is the QB next year. 3 year starter in the big 12. a pretty good one at that. not great but good. our 2 young qb's may be all stars someday but I would be shocked to see Chizik put his first season in the hands of a freshmen who hasn't taken a snap over a 3 year starter.

This is intended as "all in good fun" message board discussion, so don't get overly serious or angry with what I'm about to type. Insert DMac for BM in what you wrote above, and come up with something like the following:

"Dan McCarney is a good coach; not great but good. He has the longest tenure in the Big XII and has twice been named coach of the year by his peers. I'll be shocked if ISU entices him to resign and puts their destiny in the hands of a guy who's never been head coach at any level."

There's a distinct analogy to be made between Dan McCarney the coach and Bret Meyer the QB. Both had one great year and failed to build on it in the suceeding season(s).

I'm not saying that BM won't be the QB next year; simply that I hope it's an open competition and forces Bret to win the job if he's able to. Several others have addressed it as if it's a done deal. I simply hope it's not...

This year is not on Meyer's shoulders. Did he play well? No. But when nobody around you is playing well it is difficult. There won't be a QB competition next year. They will compete but the job is already Meyer's. A first time head coach doesn't hand the ball to a first time QB w/ no snaps over a 3 year Big 12 starter. Chizik is to smart of a man for that

I agree with the enthusiasm of Meyer having to fight to keep the QB position because of the coaching change. However, I think he has it locked up. Meyer had a number of considerable improvements from last season, but they were covered up by the rest of the situation. This year, Meyer seemed to have a lot more composure (especially early in the season before he had been hit 90 times a game), he improved his scrambling ability, and his passing accuracy was much better (despite the fact that all they wanted him to throw was fades down the sideline).

I think Meyer's main crutch is his lack of intensity, and Chizik should be able to instill that in him this year. Meyer is a great QB, and I'll be thrilled to have him under center next year.

I would be happy to see Arnaud get some snaps in real games a la Chris Leak/Tim Tebow.

The lesson to be drawn from Troy Davis (or maybe Blythe or Kock) is, if you have an x-factor/game breaker on the roster, get him the damn ball.

I agree, its a whole new ball game. The new coach has to evaluate everyone, and I'm sure he'll put in whoever performs best at every position. Spring practice should be interesting with everyone presumably learning new systems, from freshmen to seniors.

One thing Meyer really struggled with was following his reads and looking off receivers. There were many balls knocked down or intercepted because Meyer locked in on receiver. That being said, I'd be shocked if he's not the starter for his senior campaign...

I hope Arnaud gives Meyer a stiff challenge, but I expect Meyer to remain the starter. He has three years starting experience, has played every team in the Big 12 and every team on our schedule next year except Kent State, and he was preseason all-Big 12 going into this season. One bad season where the whole team sucked doesn't mean Meyer can't play ball.

After watching tape of Bates I can't say I'm very impressed. His deep ball is not very good. Most of the time he just throws it up for grabs and the reciever has to make the play. That won't work int the Big XII unless he's throwing to a stud like Blythe.

He is a dual threat. If you want a pure passer, they are usually not a dual threat. Nebraska wants a pure passer. Yet the Big 12 has oodles of qbs that run now days. Bates is coming to the Big 12. He can be qb and safety. He can be a running back also. A Paul Hornung multi threat.
