Hopefully that Taco Depot is run better than the Hardee's that was there before it closed down.
I don't know about that one, but their location on 1st Ave, I will no longer visit because it's been hit with so many repeat health code violations.

How is the Ames one? Haven’t been there in a couple of years. Last time I was there I was in line and saw dirty the floor was behind the counter, employees were complaining to each other, and the food items looked sketchy. Hard pass and have not been back.

The Ames location is kind of a disaster. Between the students and the mobile orders the line seems like it never moves. I think we've struck out there the last 3 times we stopped and ended up leaving. This was like mid day on a Saturday or Sunday with no events going on.

Love Panchero's but I think it's stupid to charge for queso on your burrito.

I have long wanted to start a competitor to them called "Queso Burrito" where queso is free.

I think I got spoiled because Mexican restaurants I used to eat at in Oklahoma gave you free queso and salsa with your free chips.

10 years ago adding queso to your burrito was like 35 cents, now it's over a buck. That's the problem I have with it. If you are going to charge me over a dollar then I expect a dollars worth of queso on my burrito not a stingy little spoon full.

Come visit the Grimes Pancheros. It has a 3.4 star rating on Google and everyone I've talked to says make the drive to the Johnston Pancheros as the Grimes one is usually out of a lot of ingredients.

I work in Johnston and have hit up the Grimes location multiple times so I'm very familiar. It's always a pretty terrible experience and for what ever reason they can't move people through that place. The worst Panch I've consistently had was in Ankeny though.

I'm really surprised at all these responses about the variability of the locations. I can't say as I've noticed more than a very slight difference in the locations of either franchise. In fact, I frequently go to them because I know I will get a consistently average product unlike many other fast food options.

The only bad experience I can remember was walking into a nearly empty Chipotle and the guy behind the counter wouldn't take my order and told me I needed to use their app. I went out to the parking lot, downloaded a Panchero's app, ordered and picked up my burrito on the way home.

Waukee
The DSM metro Google ratings seem to mirror the discussion of this thread.

Waukee: 2.8
Grimes: 3.4
Altoona: 3.5
Urbandale: 4.3
Johnston: 4.4
WDM: 4.5

Wife can cook and I WFH plus 3 kids 8 and under. Can eat way better at home for the price and hassle. Just got notified today my half of beef is done at the locker, going to be eating well and have a freezer full for my smoker when Spring rolls around.
Funny you say that. I cook tacos for my kids constantly after buying half a cow. It’s a ton of ground meat for tacos

2nd Pancheros planned for Waukee, one of the lots in front of Vibrant Music Hall. This would be the first with a drive thru

im morbidly curious how poor their quality can be having to also manage a drive thru. save for 3 locations in metro, Pancheros is trash with careless workers

I've been in the Waukee Pancheros twice and I think I averaged about a 30 minute wait time for my food. I can't imagine that translating over to a drive through. The ordering process would be absolutely terrible too.

The worst quick dining experience I’ve ever had in my lifetime was at Pancheros near the Waterloo mall a few years back. Not necessarily the “dining” part, but the food.

My wife and I ordered burritos to-go and on the way home both threw them away after 1 bite.

Absolutely disgusting.

I used to like Pancheros otherwise but haven’t had it since.

The Waukee location is a nightmare.

Before the pandemic I would secret shop Pancheros quite a bit. I agree with the order of the 6 locations but for me there would be a larger separation:

Grimes: 1 Absolutely lit them up in a review. Suppose to be open till 10. After I left at 9;30 I heard a click and turned around and they were locking the door. Same trip they left a pile of dirt and a broom in the dining area.

Waukee and Altoona: 1.5 almost always the employees DGAF.

Urbandale: 3 usually pretty good, queso could be runny, employees were fine.

Johnston: 4 always good service never had any issues

WDSM: 5 place kicks ass. CFA level service whenever I have went there. Super friendly employees. Zero problems.

Do we know who is going to be the owner/operator of this location? If it's the WDM Panch group, I trust them with everything. If it's the Waukee group, I won't touch it with a ten-foot pole

New franchisee in Waterloo, Insane improvement. It's actually, dare I say, consistently good.

The one in Cedar Falls is still a disaster, however.

idk if its rumor or not but heard once that the WDM panch is one of the OG locations before they began franchising and built in amazing standards and staff and the newer ones that all suck are due to corporate not really holding franchisers up to standards.
