Otz's contract

Otz’s contract is embarrassingly low. 25% lower than anyone else in the Big 12. Glad we could get him for that but this lowballing is a cheap strategy in my opinion. But if he succeeds, Pollard has proven he’ll get them more in line with Big 12 averages.
Very true.

I'm guessing if TJ's salary was $2M this thread would read the same as it does now. As mentioned multiple time here if he wins Pollard will pay him. TJ is smart enough to make sure his staff is taken care of first.

And, we have a coach that could look like a steal in 3 years who could be a lifer. For the TJ haters, yes it's possible he could be a bust but his salary won't change that. At least then he will be a economical bust.

Pollard will get him there. I remember Orr was so pleased with that number and it was a lot of money in coaching circles back then.

1) I dislike having one of the lowest-paid coaches in conference - not necessarily a great look.
2) If you average the $3.4m (plus tax!) from the UNLV buyout over the length of the contract, it’s $2.18m/year in total compensation.
3) So… that seems about right for where the market is.
4) (Frantic hand-wringing)

Who in the league should be paid less than TJ? Maybe the new Tech coach? Otherwise, he should be the lowest paid.

I think TJ is getting screwed over by ISU.
I do not like this contract.

I expected TJ to have the lowest compensation in the B12 but the reported number is a lot lower would have assumed. In the end TJ desire to take this opportunity out weighed holding out for an extra 200-300K. This type of opportunity specifically for TJ may not have been ideal timing but if he waited it may not have come back. Take the job now, build with low expectations and then he'll and ISU will be rewarded.

The offer optics for ISU isn't great but as many have stated I have no doubt there is an agreement that the contract will be revisited soon once TJ fills Hilton again. It will also allow the Athletic department to recover from Covid and get the next TV contract settled allowing for a large bump in salary. In the end TJ agreed to the contract with the long term in mind so he's not being "screwed" in my mind as you stated.

I am more curious now if/how much TJ was willing accept today lead to Prohm ultimately being let go and his quick hire. It is obvious that Pollard wasn't keen on paying Prohm and a new coach this year with the current Athletic Dept. financial situation and a lot of people thought it would have gave CSP a reprieve. If JP known TJ was willing to take a low deal to facilitate the firing and him being the replacement it could have tipped the scale.

I do not like this contract.

TJ recognizes that Iowa State paid a large buyout on his behalf so that he could come to Iowa State. TJ understands Iowa State. TJ wants to be at Iowa State and knows that a large buyout along with a massive contract that he would not get the job. Plus we paid a big buyout to Prohm. I do not think TJ is getting screwed. TJ has an incentive laden contract that will give him a decent salary with modest success. No question that the contract money was not what enticed TJ to the Iowa State job. TJ loves Iowa State.

Was TJ forced to come to ISU or something? Are we supposed to be worried that he won't be able to afford living in Ames?

People are acting like Pollard bait and switched him or something.

Perhaps he's got a vision and wants to coach in Ames and that's most important.

There is a solution to the screw job, those who don’t think he’s paid enough can mail $10k-100k checks to JP with a note that it’s for TJs boost in wages since we are underpaying him.

Not for nothing, but I’d guess he also got a VERY good deal on his new house.
