Otzelberger's First Recruiting/Transfer Class - FULL

Not to beat a not-so-dead horse, but thinking this interest indicates Fletcher isn't looking likely. Which is fine. First Wade, mainly a rebounder, who went to Nevada, Oladapo who went to Pitt, and now interest in this Nicholls State player. Thinking TJ is still looking for another 6'7" rebounding type. Interesting that we're the only P6 team on that list.

(on a side-note, is it possible that the staff does want the last scholarship to be a 1-year guy to balance things out so we have room for 2022 talent?)

Until the spot is filled you have to keep options open. Reaching out or showing interest doesn't really mean much in terms of Fletcher.

Totally agree. The staff is down to 1 current target in Fletcher and waiting on a decision. They have time to survey the transfer portal for back up plans and reach out to start the contact process.
Reading the list of other schools involved I'd be surprised if it was anything more than a feel out talk at this point.
From the players view it looks good to include ISU on the list to spark other teams interest so we need to take any lists from a player with a grain of salt.

Another guard that can handle the ball will be needed. I would take a forward out of that top 9 and add in whichever guard emerges, whether it is Grill, Jackson or Walker.

I am starting to think that Walker is going to focus solely on being a backup point guard this upcoming season. I don’t think he had clearly defined roles last year and that probably made things confusing for guys on the court.

We either "checked" on him and he interpreted that as interest. Or someone Otz doesn't like one of the guys in the rotation and wants a role playing defender and rebounder.

To over speculate... The most likely candidate for Garvin to possibly take minutes from would be Javon. He's not an Otz guy, doesn't rebound well for his size and seems to need the ball in his hands to be "affective".

Sure seems like the staff really is looking to fill a defense and rebounding whole at the forward position. This surprises me as my amateur eyes see a bigger need for a ball handler and 3 point shooting

I disagree with this. Feels like its more likely that we're just covering all our bases. That's what we did with that Madson from Cincy, who was pretty clearly 2nd choice incase we didn't get our first options(which we did)

Now, if i see that we offered him then I'd be a little worried. That would be a pretty big sign that we've moved on

My expectations for this team are .500 even without Fletcher, but I wouldn't be surprised if they squeezed into the tournament. Do I expect them to make the tournament? No, .500 is my expectation, but Otz has put together a solid roster so far and the changes in the Big 12 could help the Clones land in the bubble. I'd be more surprised if we are way below .500 again.

it all depends the ability to gel and come together as a team. Lots of work to do. Half the team hasn’t even met the other half the team yet, nobody knows the offense or defense. Just sooo many moving parts

Exactly. That said, this group is starting to remind me of Tim Floyd’s second year, a motley collection of transfers and JC kids that had never played together, turned out pretty well.

Hopefully actually having an actual full off-season to work and hoop together will solve some of those “familiarity” issues.

The most overlooked era in ISU basketball.

The more I think about the 2021/22 basketball season.. The more I think about Gabe Kalscheur being our X factor. If we can get his shot figured out (return to a blend of freshman and sophomore shooting). Gabe shot 25% from 3 last year.. But a single bright spot may be that he shot 30% against top 50 teams. If we the fans can fill up Hilton and get that place fell like it's old self. The 3's will start raining in IMO

Like I've said before. Our new guard coach, JR Blount hasn't had a team he's been apart of (since Drake) shoot below 35% from 3.. Having a dynamic point guard (Hunter) who can get into the lane and create opportunities for scorers around him has to help

I agree... We'll see if it ultimately works but Gabe and the staff feel confident last year shooting was a bit of a fluke and he'll rebound.
Gabe is a value add for his leadership/defense at SG regardless. if he can shoot 35%+ he is an above average starter in the B12. Even last year while shooting poorly Big 10 defenses still had to respect his outside shot and not leave him creating space for others due to his history of shooting.

At this pace, I'm half expecting my neighbor kid who is a 2023 ISU FB offer (will likely be a good BB recruit too), and plans to play football in college, to announce he has committed committed to ISU and will switch to play BB for TJ.

Someone else beat me to this point, but his free-throw shooting - generally considered a better indicator of ability because it removes the variables of 3p shots - didn’t dip. That bodes well for a regression (good in this case!) to the norm from 3.
