Welcome to another weekly edition of On That Note. OTN is hosted by @cyclones500, @CycloneRulzzz and me on alternate weeks.

This week's topic was submitted by a regular contributor to our posts.

@VeloClone said: "Songs that when you hear them you automatically think of another song. Two examples: -When I hear Carly Simon's Jesse, I always think of Rick Springfield's Jessie's Girl. -When I hear Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice, I always think of Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie (for obvious reasons). Songs should be posted in pairs (or trios, etc. as appropriate)."

Of course not all connections are as obvious as Velo's second example - so please explain why the songs are connected for YOU if it isn't immediately obvious.

Last week's OTN was on the topic of German artists or songs with German words or phrases. It can be found here: https://cyclonefanatic.com/forum/threads/on-that-note-achtung-baby.258397/

My mind-linked songs.

Interestingly enough one of mine is also Jessie's Girl. For some reason I always link it to The Breakup Song by The Greg Kihn Band. They were hits at the same time (summer 1981) and I remember having both singles. Both artists seemed to be new on the scene at that time (though Rick Springfield had a hit in 1972 Speak to the Sky)

Another two I link mentally are Ventura Highway by America and Take It Easy by the Eagles. Both songs are somewhat thematically about a highway/road/street (Standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona... It's a girl my Lord in flatbed Ford slowing down to...) and again, both were out about the same time 1972. And at that time, I thought the two groups had a similar sound (later it was obvious they didn't).

OK, this was a mashup once, and I think about the other songs if I ever hear one of them being played.
It's honestly a pretty cool collaboration:

Instant Karma - John Lennon

Come and Get It - Badfinger

I purchased both of these singles at the same time. Probably the first time I actually had the money together to purchase 2 (two) records in a single purchase. Both were released (in the US) in February 1970 so were on the radio at the same time. Plus, added bonus, both were on the Apple records label.

These two are by the same band, so it’s likely to have similarity in sound. Tempo is roughly the same, almost could swap chorus of one for the verse of the other. But there’s a personal element for me. My oldest sister bought BTO’s “Four Wheel Drive,” and I listened to a little of it with her one night (when she allowed me into her room!) -- it got to “Hey You,” I thought it was “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet,” so I started singing that instead. She laughed and said “No, they aren’t the same song!” Then I asked her if “Nothing Yet” was on the album, too. (It isn’t). … They'll always be linked in my mind.

Summer of 1969. Spent the day with my older sister and two younger brothers and a girlfriend of hers who was also a neighbor. We literally spent the whole day at Wild Cat Den State Park. My sister was also in the process of sewing giant daisy petals around the round ceiling light in the car (Flower Power!). Later my Dad stopped and brought us chicken and we had a family picnic supper before we headed home.

It was one of those unforgettable days of youth that seem too good in your memory. I even reconnected with that neighbor 45+ years later and in conversation asked if she remembered that. And she, just like me, remember THESE exact 2 songs being all over KSTT that day.

So now whenever I hear one or the other I think of the other one and that day.

When I first heard Len's "Steal My Sunshine" two decades ago, I thought "where have I heard that instrumental part before?" Then I finally figured it out. A similar instrumental was in the Andrea True Connection's "More, More, More." The two are now forever tied in my mind.

Steal My Sunshine

More, More, More - 2:20 is that same instrumental

The little closing bit at the end of this (around 2:05) always makes me think it was lifted from Moon River. When I hear it my mind often just continues on with Moon River in my head.

More of a case of “one album reminds me of the other,” but I’ll zoom in to 2 songs in particular. From “Freeze Frame” (J. Geils Band) and “I Love Rock ’n Roll (Joan Jett and The Blackhearts). During track season when I was a HS junior, a member of the girls’ team had both these albums on cassette, and played the two nearly non-stop via boom box on the bus, to and from meets, throughout the entire season. One from each album seemed to get more heavy-rotation than the others. If I hear (or think) of one, I think of the other.

Summer after my sophomore year of high school. I had a drivers' license, the keys to the station wagon, and a bunch of friends from my church youth group crammed in the wagon with me...every Wednesday, and often on Fridays & Saturdays as well. No, my parents did NOT know how many teenagers can fit in an Olds VistaCruiser. :D
These three songs are inextricably linked with that summer - each had a catchy line or two that were more shouted than sung. If you know the songs, I'll bet you're reading these in rhythm, aren't you?

"Bon, c'est bon...bon, bon, c'est bon, bon!"

"Ooh, Ahh, don'tcha jes' love it?
Ooh, Ahh, don'tcha jes' love it?
Don'tcha love it, don'tcha love it, oooohhh yeah, dont'cha love it?
DON'TCHA jes' love it now!!!"

"Sing along with us, dee dee dee-dee dee
Dah dah dah-dah dah,
yeah we're hap-happy..."

Whenever I hear an AC/DC song with Bon Scott, I always think he was the lead singer for Krokus. They seem to have very similar voices. Would have been very cool if he would have replaced Brian Johnson instead of Axl Rose on the last leg of there tour a few years ago.

It's a pretty obvious one. Steve Miller refers to himself as The Space Cowboy and the Gangster of Love on The Joker. Both of which are Miller Band tunes...

Miller Band part 2:

The intro to Fly Like an Eagle is another Miller Band tune, My Dark Hour (on which Paul McCartney can be heard playing bass and backing up on vocals).
