Ok, so this list made me feel really old, judging by how many titles (and artists) below #100 I've never heard of before. Yikes. But I was quite happy to see a lot of songs/artists deserving of making a list like this. The one I'm going to focus on is "Can't Get You Out of My Head" by Kylie Minogue. Most people, if they know her at all, believe her to be a minor pop star with just a couple of hits because that's all that happened in America. Starting with "The Locomotion" in upon its indie release in her native Australia, Kylie quickly became a global superstar on the level of Madonna (one of her early contemporaries). "Locomotion" made it all the way to #3 on the Hot 100 in 1988 and two other songs from her debut album also cracked the top 40. But that was it in the U.S. for years until "Out of My Head" took over the world by early 2002. The follow-up single ("Love at First Sight") nearly made the top 20, but she managed only two more chart singles on the Hot 100 after that, both peaking below #90. However, she was a consistent hit maker in much of the rest of the world during all those years U.S. radio ignored her (even though she had numerous #1 dance/club play hits in America). She had 38 top ten hits in the UK and 23 top tens in Australia. "Out of My Head" went to #1 in 26 countries and ended up being the biggest single of the year for 2001 in Austria, Italy, Romania, and Switzerland. It was the #3 single of the year in Australia and the UK and top ten in ten more countries. My favorite thing about this song is the mash-up with New Order's "Blue Monday". It just works.
