I handtimed the speed from snap to kick on his two blocks. My initial intuition was that he was taking too long, but he got them off in two seconds flat. It was poor play design. Vance and then Maro are not built to stop a 280 lb DE from getting through. Against Ohio, big Howard Brown was protecting him, and I don’t think Van Ness gets through that.
Maybe another gaffe will reveal itself, but if the punter was the issue, he wouldn’t still be punting.
It looked like Ohio almost got one of Perkin's punts earlier in the game.
Punts will be thin margins if the opponent wants to come after it and you’re not doing a punt safe. I think Bruns did a nice job on the IA Everywhere pod after Iowa explaining the punt formation. As long as the punter is getting it off in two seconds or less with the right launch angle and the play design is sound, the punt should be safe. Close doesn’t count in punt blocks.
True. But do you change scheme, or as others have suggested, punter? Gabbarini got his only long-range punt (that I measured) about ~0.3 seconds faster, but doesn’t have the same range. I think the staff is trying to maximize coverage to take advantage of Perkins’s bigger leg, but that means getting the protection details right. I think Brown is a good solution. We might not be done seeing the punt team evolve. Formation was a little different against Ohio, as well.
Despite being a TE he is the best FB in the Big 12.

Did you not see the adjustments they made on Saturday? They had more beef in the shield. Apparently there are more adjustments necessary, but it isn't like they haven't changed anything.
Watching the play again I think the issue was more with the snap count / pre snap timing. You could tell it was designed for Noel to stop where he did and go. But he was trying to delay it until the snap. He didn't delay it long enough.
My verdict is that one was more on Dekkers/Downing than it was Noel
Not trying to be controversial but did anyone else thing Sage sucked as the color guy on Saturday? Like is his life so busy and important that he couldn’t take more time to learn the team? Maybe Blum and his knowledge of the roster has covered up his deficiencies in the past.
He made some mistakes, like getting Hufford mixed up with Tyler Miller. But I can’t say that he “sucked”.
That said, I only heard him when I rewatched, because I have the sound down and the radio on when the game is live.
I feel like whatever engaging energy he used to have is not there anymore. I could barely listen to him on the Rose n Blum 'cast. I haven't seen him, but he almost sounds like he's had plastic surgery. At least that's the energy I got from him.
