Not trying to excuse the behavior from last night, but don't you think if the City of Ames cleaned/fixed up Campustown a bit that people might take a little more pride in keeping it safe and clean.

I have no problem with people being on their high horses. The people involved are idiots and imo deserve to face repercussions.

But seriously, a Tuesday night? Tuesdays in Ames are for Tacos and love making, not flipping cars and tear gas.
I think the underclassmen assessment may be correct considering they're wearing backpacks.
What are the chances they actually catch these people? And who would classify as "these people"? Only people destroying property? People chanting? People standing by?
My guess is they arrest 20 people for this riot. The one Friday night will be bigger unless the police do something really big.

just cancel the events........if the kids can't handle it, just get rid of it. never understood the desire to flip cars and knock over light poles. I mean i get drunk plenty and those thoughts never cross my mind.
In theory yes, but you think if Campus town was a little nicer this wouldn't have happened? That is just being naive. These kids wanted to eff things up and a "cleaned up" Campustown wouldn't have stopped them
Drunk idiots don't think about things like this and they don't care. And the people who do care are quickly outnumbered in situations like this and have no way to stop a riot from happening before it starts.
I personally think its time to cancel the thing forever. But if they're going to allow it to happen, the authorities should remove everything that can be picked up and thrown from campustown. Cars, trash cans, newspaper holders, everything. If the drunk idiots don't have anything they can use as weapons it might make it less fun to riot.
I'm sure there are good enough pics & videos from last night to identify the majority of people flipping the cars and destroying property.

Yea, I'm thinking 5 people a car, 5 people per light pole = 20. Some of them won't get identified but some of the other sign destroyers will.

Cancelling it won't change much. Everybody knows which weekend VEISHEA is even when there isn't one. It's not the on campus activities that cause problems. It's the off campus parties where things start. Cancelling the on campus events only hurts the student clubs that actually put on school sponsored events. The parties will still go on as planned.
I don't agree with this. Campustown isn't that bad now and going through some MAJOR improvements. I almost think the opposite. As a business owner, I know the territory, but I wouldn't want to deal with the aftermath of this or even the annoyance of smaller issues that would come from dumb people disrespecting my property.
This is what I cant understand. Every single person who was involved last night is going to get caught/expelled (assuming they are students). In today's age, you cant hide your involvement in a riot in public. Its just completely idiotic to think you can.
That being said, Im assuming ISU will take the high road, and just continue as planned and not draw that much attention to last night. They all know with the amount of pictures/video that was captured last night, that everyone will be caught and punished. The more attention they draw to this event, the more likely it will happen again.
I think the best thing that went basically unnoticed was when the cops shut down the Kum&Go gas station and kept everyone off that property.
It is likely that the crimes happening were limited to a small number of people...BUT, did they have friends that could have pulled them away and said "time to go home?"
I hate to sound like an old man here, but there could be some SERIOUS consequences....for property damage, but what if they can narrow down who pushed the light pole over that injured the other person and their injuries are serious?
Would you rent a sweet $500k+ home to a group of college kids? I wouldn't. They didn't pay for it, therefore they won't respect it.
