In Jimmy I trust, but there has to be some brutal game of chicken going on right now with coaches and players(agents).
The 3 guys we "picked up" look solid, but are from Gardner-Webb, Ferris St, and ?
But how many are we talking to, like Cornerback X, who says I want $750K to come to ISU, we, the staff thanks but you're too rich, and then in 2 weeks, when CB X comes back and says, well, ok, now I will take $500k....
I wonder who will break first, coaches and start paying, or players and start lowering value.

Yep. He’s gotta bring in his guys so the team knows how to muff punts, run halfback tosses in the pouring rain, and not compete for championships!

just kidding…
That won't happen at PSU.... he'll probably hire a decent special teams coach there. Not sure why he didn't here though?

It’ll be the same as the high school recruiting process. You’ll need to see some of the big name commit before the rest of them do. The schools with the big budgets I’m sure have a lot of “non-commitable” offers out there to make sure their backup plans don’t get gobbled up while their primary options are deciding. That will slow this process down greatly.

The money aspect complicates things a lot. It is no longer accepting an offer where we want you and you want to come play here on a basic level. Now it's we want you at X dollars, a vague promise to get you some NIL outside the rev share, promises to start if transferring, etc. So many variables to every offer. If you aren't directly following a coach to a new school no matter what, or grabbing an offer to move up a level or two and earn a little money where you never had that opportunity before, it probably takes some time to sort out.

Honestly if you leave and don’t go to PSU but go bigger and get yourself a bag, I respect it. Good for Jontez.
Brings up an interesting topic: Even if Campbell was still here, how many of our guys would have been poached for more money? That's not being talked about enough IMO. Yes, I'm peeved that CMC left, and I hate that he's taking our guys with him, but some of these stars may have been poached regardless.

Trinidad Chambliss, who just threw for 362 yards and two touchdowns against Georgia played for ... wait for it... Ferris St. last year. Not saying this is not an outlier, but I'd rather give the benefit of the doubt before anyone steps on the field.

Seeing what’s happening with some of the top guys, I think this was a major factor in Campbell leaving.

After telling guys to take a home town discount for years, I think he saw the writing on the wall that the House settlement was going to be a game changer for places that could fund it and provide additional NIL opportunities. I think that was for sure part of the reason he left this year, he was going to lose major contributors on a veteran team.

That’s a good question. At a surface level, I think Jontez was a real risk given the programs currently after him and the fact he’s not following Campbell to PSU.

I haven’t heard anything on Cooper. Does he have visits set up.

I’m just wondering how many of the guys we’re looking at also have been told to sit tight by the bigger schools because they are their 2nd option. After a couple rounds of this, you have coaches and agents knowing that you aren’t hitting on every player so you need to make sure that next guy doesn’t commit elsewhere first. And I think the agent part of that is very important. Players change every year, but the schools get relationships with those agents to convince those 2nd options to be patient. Which, may not always be in the athletes’ best interest.

That's the stuff that is fascinating. Sure, the big names can get paid and sign right away....but the musical chairs piece to it all...would be cool to get some data over time to show how this works.

Like Xmas items at WalMart after the holidays. You pay full on Xmas eve as you need the items and will pay more....but several days later same items 70% off

For sure! It's a big game of musical chairs. Like NFL free agency, nobody moves until the top players at the positions get signed and establish the market. And that's with a salary cap! Then things move quickly.

Every player is going to want to hold out for highest value in the portal when they should be looking for fit and opportunity to play.

That was sort of my point. The 3 we picked up, although not super well-known programs, seem like great "value".
Which means we can have more money to spend later. Just will be interested, FOR ALL programs, not just ISU, when "later" will be.

This. Exactly. And I think it was big driver in his decision. We dodged multiple bullets last year but things were escalating quickly this year. We wouldn't have been gutted but fair chance Cooper and Tez would be poached, maybe Black and Sama or Hansen? I think Rocco and Brahmer would have been taken care of and are attached to campbell but you could have been looking at another meh season.

Yes, it works both ways, we could have shored up reciever/LBs in portal as well.
