***Official portal tracker thread***

Dude, I get your point. I’m not trying to argue with you or anyone else here.

My response was directed to you trying to equate this to getting recruited over before anything was signed. Those are simply not the same thing in terms is agreements being made between a university and an athlete.

You were arguing on emotional grounds and now talking like an attorney.

I shared this because I think it’s of interest right now and because I’m trying to show the personal side of things for these kids. All the focus is on ones that DONT want to be here and I’m simply sharing a story about one who DID. That’s it.
Then tell him to not sign the papers they send and take the scholarship. They can’t force him to not take it.

I get that, and I know there are rules for the agreement and the player could stay this year, and I think their scholarship is even guaranteed after that, but if their goal was to play and be successful in football then it’s in their best interest to hear the truth.
100%.

But it sounds like he wasn’t really told anything.
In particular, he wasn’t told what he lacked and wasn’t reassured they’d honor the commitment and give him ample opportunity to hone his craft as a redshirt if that’s what he decided.

That’s what it is, he has a scholarship, but they aren’t going to let him around the facility. His clock starts ticking once he sets foot on campus so it would be a wasted year. Guessing they would give him no NIL opportunities and it would be a bad look when he hits the portal. Scholarships and annual things so I’m guessing they wouldn’t renew it.

His best shot is now…given he’s got tape.

Sitting at ISU will make attracting another offer much harder IMHO.

Playing at a lower level would be better than being unwanted by your coaches and being a tackling dummy.

Is it really worth it to do that to a kid with 85 open spots to fill?

Yeah, I get that. But again, this is ostensibly a grown adult GM calling a 17 year old kid.

Given the description it wouldn’t be unreasonable for the kid to think he’d be persona non grata if he chose to show up this spring. I mean, the coach couldn’t even be bothered to spend a few minutes on the phone.

This kid graduated high school early so he could attend spring practice. Unless he finds a school and enrolls im the next month he’s missing out on that.

It is not inconceivable the best option for this kid would have been to keep his hundreds of thousands in NIL and get to work in the spring so he’d be the best he could be when he entered the portal next year.

It certainly be better than taking an entire year off of organized football while collecting the cash because the coaches were pissed you were on campus.

It may be better than where he ends up regardless.

Do you really think they would give him any NIL opportunities? The way BB said things were done was the athletes were paid for participating in events. Guessing it wouldn’t happen.

Hey, it sucks for the kid that he got caught in a coaching change, I truly get it. I’m looking at this as if it were my kid, don’t go where you aren’t wanted. It will o ky be a large negative.

Went through the whole roller coaster of emotions. Two days after signing day he gets this news out of the blue. I think first response was "i'm out". Then slept on it and decided that he really liked CMC and his position coach, but also really liked ISU. Texted with Rogers over the weekend and expressed he wanted to see it out. Didn't think anything of it until Tuesday when he got a call from the new GM. Was shocked - especially as word was getting around that a lot of other guys would be leaving.

He'll end up being fine, but he's been really committed to ISU for awhile and cut off his recruitment from other schools his junior year for all intents and purposes. Graduated high school early so he could enroll early.

I get this "it's a business" thing, but that's a lot for a 17 year old kid to handle.

I don't think it even dawned on him he probably could have just said "no, I'm not signing $hit". But then again - do you really want to be on a team where you know you're not wanted?

I admittedly feel a certain way about this because I've known him since he was a little boy and took him to his first ISU game. Ran into him at a game this fall and he thanked for taking him down and said that weekend was what really got him thinking about ISU. My kids were so excited to see him play next year.

I know none of this matters and there are posters here that will be dicks about it, but yeah - there is a human side to all of this you hate to see.

IMO everything you said could be made up ********. We really don’t know. And you really shouldn’t be airing this out with the obviously damaging attacks against Rogers as a form of retaliation. Anonymous poster on a message board knowing the intimate details of a high schoolers NIL deal that isn’t a parent. Not sure the parents of the kid or the kid are being truthful with you. Or that you are being truthful with us. So everyone should take an allegation like you made with a grain of salt.

My ignorant guess is a signed NIL deal would have to be honored too. Maybe not?

But yeah, this is one of the aspects of how it sounds like it was handled that sound bad.

This kid didn’t do anything wrong.

Maybe they tell him he’d need to grow 6 inches, gain 30 pounds, and drop a quarter second on his 40 time to ever see the field? Fine.

But the decent thing to do is assure him he’d still get to use the facilities and practice with the team like everyone else as long as he was a good teammate if that’s what he decided to do.

Even if you think tnis is just a business, which I don’t fully agree with, there is still a right way to do business. I wouldn’t patronize one that operated in this fashion.

And I have in fact steered clear of prospective employers based on how they’ve treated employees and prospective employees. It is fairly common in my industry to talk about such things, and the power dynamic between employer and employee tends to cycle through phases.

I'm just saying it's not something I could do. Having the GM break the news makes it callous and gross.
Good or bad, CFB is a pure business now. These players are paid a chunk, they are being treated like employees. It sucks, but it’s the new system. We can take the players that he doesn’t feel fits but that could delay the rebuild a year and how many fans will say in 3 years, gotta give him a pass because he kept some players he didn’t want? None, they will call him dumb.

Dunno. I got the impression there were guaranteed NIL deals and this kid had signed one. Maybe not?

Anyway, hopefully it was just a case of a kid slipping through the cracks and not the first sign I’m going to be rooting hard for Oregon in the CFP title game against the SEC team Rogers is coaching in a couple years.

And in college football, kids pay attention to who wins, puts players in the NFL, and now who pays what. If someone pulled a scholly, kids won’t pay that much attention.

I’m assuming any signed NIL deal has provisions that protect both Athlete and Entity.

Those provisions probably include the Athlete has to enroll. Or be on the team. Or whatever.

So if player doesn’t end up playing , regardless if player decides, or if program decides, the deal is void.

Just a guess

So Rogers will be coaching an SEC team in a couple years now? And the allegations and situation about this kid are now verified fact? I smell ******** in all of this. If this high schooler was getting an NIL deal worth hundreds of thousands then the P4 schools should be all over him and it is likely one of our higher rated recruits.

From what I have heard from SDSU sources, this is Rodgers in a nutshell. If he wins it will be fine, but he is going to struggle with the media and fans compared to Campbell.
If that’s true coming to ISU might have been a bad idea.

Not a lot of margin for error following up the most successful coach in school history, especially if that coach was very likable and you’re an *******.

If true either we’re going to see previously unimaginable success or a new coach within a couple seasons.

It is a joke. It is referring to a previous coach who was maybe lacking in good dude qualities (but had some sweet, sweet coinage).

Yeah, you’re right this could be a fabricated story, but I got the impression @twincyties had firsthand information.

Also, the NIL budget is what, $13.5M? That’s ~$128K per scholarship player.

I don’t think a kid getting say, $250K at ISU is guaranteed to find a spot at another P4 school post early signing for similar money (especially in time to enroll for spring).

That’s totally fine and I take no offense.

I’ve been a fan for over 40 years, graduated from the school, donate as much as I can, and spend a lot of weekends and vacations with my family supporting our teams. I have nothing to gain from any of this personally.

Very interesting reaction, but - like you - I guess I’ll also take with a grain of salt.

Rocco supposedly made $1.5 million last year. Stars get money. Unproven lower rated high schooler kids aren’t getting what you think.

So parents and a high school commit are giving intimate details of their NIL deal to a friend and that friend airs grievances on an anonymous message board. That’s a serious lack of judgement . Campbell has $30 million NIL. I am sure Campbell will give one of his ISU recruits more money to go to Penn State.
