***Official Minnesota Vikings Draft Pick Discussion Thread***

Tweet from Jeff Zulgad, Vikings beat writer for StarTribune:

Ballard on report he failed drug test for marijuana at combine: "That's confidential ... I'm not willing to speak on that right now."

Brandon Burton, CB from Utah in the 5th. Adds depth. Don't hate the pick. Vikes made their pick almost immediately. Didn't take much time off the clock. That's a good indicator that he was the guy they wanted.

I like the Burton pick. He is a good press corner and if he is put in a lot of press situations he will be successful.

yep, they took him a lot earlier than people expected, but he was the QB they wanted, and they didn't want to risk losing him to Washington at 16. With the way the rest of the draft has played out so far, I think they're doing just fine.

right. He'll fit in well in a cover 2 system where corners are asked to play close to the line. Hopefully Cedric Griffin can stay healthy and Chris Cook can show some progress. The Vikes have talent in the secondary. They just need some consistency. A guy like Burton can hopefully come in and compete for the nickel or dime spot.

Well it looks like the Vikings are going to pass on all of the available ISU players. Just took a safety and a center. I was hoping for Lamaak or Sims.

I think the Burton pick was a smart pick he was one of top avaliable heading into today.

I think Burton was the highest rated player in the 5th round on NFL network FWIW.

I'm actually very happy with this draft minus the Ponder pick (but it's warming on me).

Fill a lot of needs with players that were also high value for the pick they were taken at.

The question I have with the Ballard pick is I thought Wilf said he wanted a high character players but yet they take a player in Ballard who I know fills a need but when your owner wants high character and and a guy fails a drug test at the combine when every prospect is tested that's just stupid

If you haven't go to accessvikings.com and watch his intro presser. I think Ponder is going to be good. He said the stuff Musgrave has given him is very similar to what he ran at FSU.

All in all, I think we did a good job addressing needs.

1. Christian Ponder - QB (Florida State)
2. Kyle Rudolph - TE (Notre Dame)
4. Christian Ballard - DT (Iowa)
5. Brandon Burton - CB (Utah)
6. Demarcus Love - OT (Arkansas)
6. Mistral Raymond - S (South Florida)
6. Brandon Fusco - C (Slippery Rock)
6. Ross Homan - OLB (Ohio State)
7. De'Aundre Reed - DE (Arizona)
7. Stephen Burton - WR (West Texas A&M)

Ballard is an idiot for failing that drug test, but let us be realistic about marijuana use in the NFL....it's prevalent. I think there was a report last year about how former NFL players estimated marijuana use in more than half of the NFL players. The Vikings also drafted Percy Harvin in the 1st rd when he failed a drug test the week prior to the draft....he has not been in trouble since.

I do not recall Ballard ever having any issues in college. He may not be the smartest guy, but I don't think he is a low character player.
