I'll add my thoughts to Peter's, since I agree with many of them
Absolutely - I thought the same thing the whole second half. Hopefully for Grambling's season they can figure out how to make the game run through him - it seemed like they forgot about him for long stretches.A couple of thoughts on last night. Grambling was obviously a much better team than FDU and found some ways to beat our D. The Munoz kid is good. 6-6 Freshman from Chicago. Good playmaker. Wouldn't be surprised to see him playing at a bigger school next year.
I agree - but I think post play is going to be a struggle all season. It's just the way the roster shook out - if we had landed Oscar Cluff it would be better - but the options were limited. I do think the rotations will get better - I'm not sure missing bunnies will.Buchanan: hasn't looked good in the first few games, but seemed to be much more in the flow last night. Did exactly what he was brought in to do. Obviously, it was against an overmatched frontcourt, but good to see at least a flash of what he might be capable of.
He looked really good, on both ends. His rip and run steal 1:1 near half court was Lipsey-esque. He looks to be really invested (and talented) on the defensive end. I thought he was going to end up as the 9th guy, playing inconsistent minutes, but he's clearly going to be a heavy rotation player. Toure-Lipsey-Batemon is a killer defensive backcourt.Bateman: Good to see the ball go through the hoop. If he can three and D like that for us this season, he'll cement a place in the rotation
I just love the kid. The last freshman that I remember being wowed by their poise and maturity the first time they stepped on the floor was Monte Morris - not that their games are similar. And Monte didn't start until halfway through his freshman year. He just plays so hard every second he's on the court - it's something I'm not sure you can teach. He's a LOT like Lipsey, but bigger, stronger and faster. And with a better shot as a freshman. He's going to be an all-timer.Toure: Just reminds me a lot of Curtis Stinson from back in the day. It doesn't look pretty but its very effective. Plays bigger than he is and is just very physical for a freshman. Our defensive speed and pressure with him and Tamin are going to be a nightmare for other teams.
He was a highly decorated HS player - winning WI Gatorade Player of the year over Batemon - but he wasn't nearly as highly regarded of a recruit, if I remember correctly. He's got all kinds of offensive skills and good size - but he's not a physically or defensively ready as Batemon or Toure. Hopefully he sticks around and picks up a bigger role next year.Mitchell: I've been curious about his progress, and it was good at least to see him on the floor. Very highly regarded recruit who is buried on the depth chart. Hope we can keep him around the program for development.
Mulder is what he is. Dunks on drop offs, put-backs, hustle and 5 fouls. Pleta is more interesting - he looks so much bigger than Mulder or even Buchanon. He's pretty raw, but he has potential both offensively and as a rim protector. In both games he's been in when we've gone small with Toure-Lipsey-Nelson-Heise. It's a very interesting lineup.Mulder/Pleta: Warm bodies at this point. Still trying to learn how they can impact the game for this team.
