***Official Big 12 Expansion Thread '16***

It's amusing watching all the CSU hate coming from fans of a program which hasn't won more than three games since 2012, and not been more than a single game over .500 in sixteen seasons.

No one is saying CSU (or any other school with a less than full house on Saturdays) will suddenly be SRO for games in year one of Big 12 membership. Everything that builds will take time. Stop being so short-sighted already. Who do you think will want to join this league that doesn't already draw well and have a good revenue source from their current league? You really think we're going to poach someone 'big'? You're dreaming. Every single school, with the exception of maybe BYU, is going to be at least a modest project and will need to grow into its Big 12 status. There are no other options if this league is going to expand. You HAVE to look at the schools with the most potential.

The most potential theory even kills CSU. Houston is a much larger market with a football program that could dominate. UCF has almost 50,000 in enrollment and has a ton of potential.

BYU is ready to go. So even by potential it would be Cincinnati vs CSU for the 14th slot. CSU shouldn't win out over Cincinnati

The idea was that BYU would be similar to Notre Dame and would play fewer Big 12 conference games - a concession to gain stability and join a P5 conference. N.D. only plays 5 ACC conference games this year. BYU could play 5 or 7 conference games while everyone else in the Big 12 conference plays their division and BYU would be available in the list of cross-divisional teams to fill up the 9 game conference schedule.
If you add BYU, you have to add them in football. Notre Dame is not a football conference member in the ACC. They are a full member in all other sports which establishes the relationship for football. It doesn't make sense to add BYU without adding them as a full football member.

The difference is that 3 win team still averaged over 55k fans last year. However, last night's game has no impact on expansion whatsoever.

Agree that BYU, Cincinnati, and Houston are the top options, though I think UConn is a close fourth. The rest of the pack is well behind.

Bob Bowlsby spoke for about 13 minutes in the NRG pressbox before the game. Nothing that will get 50 RTs but will pass along what he said.

Bob Bowlsby on expansion decision by Oct. 17 Big 12 presidents meeting. "I think we’ll make progress. I can’t characterize it beyond that."

More Bowlsby: "We’re always going to be concerned about academics and compliance and integrity and those kinds of things... It's important."

The fact that Memphis missed the cut while Rice and Tulane made it means that academics matter to the presidents. People in this thread have said otherwise and they are just wrong

There are only three candidates from that list who you could argue won't water down the conference (from a football standpoint): BYU, Cincinnati, Houston. I will pass on the rest of the field. The Big 12 needs to go after P5 schools.

I would argue UCONN belongs in there. Former Power Conference Team. Played in a major bowl game, Large Population center, Good to GREAT MBB (and WBB) history. Is a "University of [insert an actual state name]" or "[actual state name] State University." I'd put them behind BYU and on par with Cincy - and a step ahead of UH (no more Texas schools please).

If P5 teams are interested in joinin, the they would rate ahead of Houston, Cincy, etc. However, not sure the timing is right where schools from the Pac12 or ACC are looking to jump ship. In 2019/2020 they might have interest in joining the Big12.

I realize ACC schools signed a GOR through 2036, but that could change if ESPN doesn't launch a linear channel in 2019. ESPN avoided a $40M annual penalty by announcing the ACC Network in July. ESPN was able to launch the SEC Network in 1 year, they have requested 3 years to establish the ACC linear network.

This might be one situation where patience may pay off. IMO UConn is the only school in the final 11 that would be considered as an expansion by another conference (ACC) in the next 3-6 years.

I posted something similar on the Houston/OU thread but it's better suited here so sorry about the duplicate info.

No way you can applaud the B1G for taking Rutgers and Maryland and then criticize the BigXII for taking a Houston. Not sure the networks have a leg to stand on if they are arguing this is a money grab because that's all Rutgers/Maryland was.

Houston belongs with the big boys and there is no question if you watch what they are doing to OU. I can see people watching Houston over half of the B1G. They are fun to watch. Congrats to Coach Herman.

You could look at it another way, by whipping on OU, they might be playing their way out of the Big12!

Disagree. Networks (i.e. money) are the driver.

I agree, but egos also come into play. Gundy at OSU has already gone on the record questioning why the Big12 would add Houston as it would hurt Texas recruiting for existing Big12 schools. Gundy can probably say it, while UT and OU might feel the same, but remain quiet.

Northern schools might resist, feeling the conference would be too Texas centric with 5 of 12/14 schools from the state.

It only takes 3 to say no.

Regardless of what you think of Houston, I don't think one game today should change that very much in either direction. It's just one game and Houston football very well could be a Tom Herman flash in the pan anyway.

For those that are swayed by what UH did to OU today, please remember UH is one bad UT season away from not having Tom Herman as a coach anymore. Todays game should not sway a vote one way or the other. UH is either voted in because the help the conference with their TV partners or they are not allowed in because they aren't a strong enough academic institution, the conference has enough Texas coverage or whatever. But one game against one B12 opponent should not be counted on to sway votes that change the course of the conference and a school for years into the future.

That really seems like a weak excuse to me. When the Big 12 formed, Texas' population was 20 million. Today it is 27 million and growing. There are plenty of recruits to go around.

OU wants to be the flagship, but can't hold the role when they get it.
