***Official Big 12 Expansion Thread '16***

ESPN is not going to buy Texas out to then let Fox profit off of them. It is not that complex. DUDE.

Explain how Fox is going to profit off ESPN? FOX will profit if FOX makes a smart TV rights purchase if Texas happens to be in the conference or not.

This really isn't complex. If the LHN isn't profitable by 2021, ESPN can avoid $14M of annual operating expenses over the final 10 years of the contract. Plus ESPN will be able to negotiate a discount of the remaining rights fee. It's a no brainer for ESPN if they can save $175M-$200M.

Just curious what is your degree in.

ESPN is not going to let Fox profit off of TEXAS . That is what they would be doing by buying them out to allow them to go to Pac 12 or Big 10. Future profits are the consideration in any decision.

LHN for ESPN as all about T3 control and preventing UT from leaving the B12. At $15M/yr, ESPN and UT both knew LHN would likely never be profitable. In ESPN's eyes, LHN saved ESPN money by not having to pay as much to another conference that UT would defect to, namely the P12. And this was all to ISU's benefit.

Not sure how your 2nd to last sentence makes sense. Since ESPN created the LHN in 2011 they have invested BIllions in both the ACC and SEC Networks over the next 20 years. After 2024 ESPN has no financial obligation to the Big12. If anything with ESPN's investmemt in the ACC and SEC Networks, they have a bigger reason to see Texas join either of those comferences.

Plus your history is off, the LHN was the reason schools like A&M and Nebraska decided to leave the Big12. There departures caused CU to jump to the Pac12. After that FOX and ESPN stepped in and saved the Big12. At this point the only benefit of the LHN for other Big12 schools is Texas must be willing to give it up to join the Big10, SEC and probably the ACC.

Didn't know there were that many groups, but it looks like they have found a common cause. The comparison to Baylor could do some damage to BYU's candidacy. First, the comparison itself, which could cause second thoughts. But, second, it points out Baylor has recently adjusted its language to be more inclusive. That, in turns begs the question of whether BYU would be willing to do likewise. Even if they were, would they get the opportunity to prove it?

As the article states, it only take 3 "no" votes to prevent a school from being added. This may just cast enough doubt to garner those 3 votes, which would open the door for some other school.

I hope all other schools veto a Houston addition. Unless we get s guarantee from TV networks on the value the Houston market would add.
I've been hearing more and more about how

Almost seems as though this thread is getting rerouted to a political one.

"Your views don't align with our views so we don't think you should join an Athletic Conference that we have nothing to do with."

Generalizing it always makes it seem hateful.

"The Nazis' views didn't align with the views of many, they should not host the Olympic Games."

Boycott debate[edit]
Prior to and during the Games, there was considerable debate outside Germany over whether the competition should be allowed or discontinued. Berlin had been selected by the IOC as the host city in 1931, but after Adolf Hitler's rise to power in 1933, observers in many countries began to question the morality of going ahead with an Olympic Games hosted by the Nazi regime. A number of brief campaigns to boycott or relocate the Games emerged in the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Czechoslovakia and theNetherlands.[38] Exiled German political opponents of Hitler's regime also campaigned against the Berlin Olympics through pro-Communist newspapers such as the Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung.

My degree is in finance and have worked in corporate finance for one of the largest companies in the world and can tell you with 100% certainty that if the LHN is not profitable, ESPN will buyout the contract.

Your right, future profits are the basis of any business venture. If those profits don't materialize, which has been the case with the LHN- the right business decision is to cut your losses. If down the road another company can make it work, good for them.

It would be really interesting to see what is really going on behind closed doors. Why is this all even playing out in public anyways? Try to pressure the networks to give more money because we're really serious that if you don't give us money we really will go to 14?

Seems like at the end of the day texas and Oklahoma are calling the shots. There is really nobody at Texas in control so they're just trying to keep status quo and please the governor. Oklahoma seems to be hedging it's bet. Money grab now and then a poor TV contract and lessor conference mates in 6 years gives them an excuse to leave. However if things go well they could always stay.
