***Official 2026 World Cup Thread***

So now that we are into the quarterfinals, what would it take to get this thread back to talking about the World Cup and not US youth soccer? We have 6 potentially great games remaining. Can we talk about that and move the rest somewhere else?

Yeah it must be regional, because in the DSM metro there are literally hundreds of teams playing tournies every weekend. Ankeny little league numbers are way down from pre Covid but there are still about 800 kids every year.
Effectively women's soccer was invented in the United States. We are decades ahead of most other countries. It isn't even close.

Which game is going to suck out of the 7 left?

England and Norway is easily the best game left, very exited for that one. Kinda a joke that Argentina just gets Switzerland at this stage.

I think Spain is going to handle Belgium pretty easily. I think with the expansion of the tourney they really need to think about reseeding some of these matchups

What are you reseeding to though? World rankings or group stage finish? If you use world rankings, that diminishes the group stage. If you use group results, that puts an extra penalty on teams randomly drawn into a difficult group. I don’t like reseeding, if there’s an upset, that team deserves the benefit what that brings.

Not sure and totally agree but man some of these paths are insanely easy and don’t feel right. Not sure if it’s from the expanded field or just from having 3 home countries.

By no means a dealbreaker but not a fan.

Remember when the Final Four used to have a third-place game? I’ll never forget Iowa losing to Purdue in the 1980 third-place game, lol.

Even the NFL used to have a third-place game (they called it the Playoff Bowl for some reason, I believe).

If you’re a player that just lost a semifinal and are looking towards the start of your European season, why would you care? Would you even play in the match? Sending out your U20 team to showcase the next generation would be more meaningful IMO.

Oh, I agree with you that nobody but FIFA cares about the third-place game. It’s just one more event to sell tickets to.

My post was more about how outdated the concept is. When players made less money and taking the best position left after the championship game was seen as meaning something, then third-place games made a little sense. They don’t any more, at least in professional sports (and I’d include the NCAA).

White knighting pro volley ball is comical. It has limited viability. But go and die on that hill.
If you're going to ignore volleyball, you might as well ignore soccer. They are very similar in terms of visibility and compensation.

Next time you don't know what you're talking about feel free to just keep it to yourself.

The market cap and income of women's vb I looked up after your an idiotic assertion they are on the same level and you are whack. Carry on shill. Go google comparisons of ticket sales. lol.
