***Official 2026 World Cup Thread***

Not going to read too much into the game since we sat so many of our starters, other than that the defense is absolutely a concern.

Might have been a nice reality check going into the knockout rounds - everything came easy to us up until this game, and we've got one of the easier paths in the knockout until at least the quarters. Nice reminder that it's actually not that easy.

Shouldn’t attempt to make anything of that game other than who you can trust of your bench.

Weah, Turner, McKenzie were terrible.

Reyna and Aaronson were pretty anonymous.

Thought Berhalter was quite good and Trusty looked the best of a makeshift backline.

Depth is the concern for this team, as expected. They win that game comfortably with the first XI.

I barely know soccer and could see that Weah was terrible. Overall they had a lot of bad midfield turnovers. Starters are much more crisp with their passing.

I’m going out on a limb and saying if just Old Man River Ream had played, the US wins that game.

When did Turkey become Turke-eh?

From Wikipedia:

"In 2022, the Turkish government requested the United Nations and other international organizations to use Türkiye officially in English, to which they agreed. Turkey has remained the common and conventional name in the English language."

The US defense is just rough. Only chance to make some noise is to just outscore everyone
Miles Robinson and Mark McKenzie are not very quality players. There’s a reason why 38 year old Tim Ream still is one of our better defenders. There isn’t any quality depth at centerback

Agree on the reality check angle. I think the coaches/team can and will use it to make sure the mindset is right for Bosnia.

The good: the ideas offensively and pressing effectiveness. I've watched a lot of USMNT and I was expecting much less from our backups. At times our press was disorganized, but that's to be expected with the rotation.

The mid: winning our individual battles, loose balls. As the guys on the Scuffed podcast say, you need to dominate your space. I thought we did a lot better job in the second half than the first, where at times we looked timid. Perhaps a result of so many guys making their first start/appearance of the World Cup.

The bad: low block and transition defense. Switching off on the final possession. I almost put transition defense in "The Mid" category as we had some nice moments but we shipped three goals. We just aren't very organized in the low block and don't have the talent at the back to consistently erase opportunities in transition. The talent can't be fixed, but we will need to improve our organization to go deep. We will need to absorb pressure in a potential quarterfinal with Spain or a team of that ilk.

I'm not worried about the last goal. Looks like we switched off a bit waiting for the whistle. Turkey created next to nothing in the second outside of the final possession (0.07 expected goals). Still excited about this team!

It’ll be a great learning point going forward for the young guys. It’s a 90 minute game and no matter how big the stage, you cannot go overboard out of the gates. That’ll come with experience, so even with the loss there was a huge benefit for the future for some of those players that we’ll need in four years.

Annoying but meaningless. We played a lot of diff dudes, showed some heart when we could have just gone through the motions second half, didn't have any injuries or yellow card losses, and we got 6 days to rest and now have a reason to be pissed and ready to go.
