My Mom grew up there and until they passed they lived in the same house for 55 years.
I worked at SIU for several years. Summers felt like Florida! I lived on the west edge of Carbondale. Prior to that, worked at Wichita State, & always said I would or want to live in Car-bonn-da-lay by the sea is what we all joked. But, was asked to come & interview for an assistant athletic trainers position at the university & ended up taking it because I had an opportunity to work football as well as wbb. I ended up liking it because it was a lot like Ames. Very much a college town.

I'm really just bummed that my rain barrel I ordered didn't get here sooner so I could have caught some of this rain to water my garden this weekend. Of course it's out for delivery today so missed it by like 8 hours.

If you've ever thought about a rain barrel - check with your cities Storm Water department, from what I've seen most offer rebates for them. Waukee and West Des Moines also offer assistance if you want to do Soil Quality Restoration (spreading compost/dirt on your lawn), which I'm going to do next spring in a hope to not only help the lawn, but level it out a bit.
How does a rain barrel work? We're on a well so I'm never sure if it's something we should explore.

Every house is different of course, but older homes, particularly in warmer climates, were often designed with some amount of airflow in mind. So you might not have AC, but air would flow through a house, potentially assisted by fans.

With AC, that design has changed. Homes are designed as sealed boxes to keep the conditioned air in and there are fewer considerations for moving outside air through a home.

I'm sure it would still be absolutely awful in weather like today, but not nearly as awful as a modern home with its AC out would be.

Yeah our farmhouse growing up has no ac and yeah...it'd get hot but you survived. Hope my kids enjoy it this week lol. Bedrooms have ac units now at least.

Basically a catch basin / collection of runoff from the roof, gutters, and downspouts that can be diverted when full. Usually elevated so that gravity-fed discharge can fill watering cans or low-pressure hoses for irrigation (via valved drain port).

Hook it up to a diverter from the downspout and it goes into a barrel for storage. Then can use for watering cans. This is my setup. Will maybe add another one next year or later this year.
