*** Official 2025 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Rockies LF dropped a ball on the transfer but they let the play go and the ball hit McGuire after he'd been forced out at third and it just caused chaos.

Umpires got together after and corrected it but it was nuts in the moment.

I wonder if the Rockies manager was trying to argue that we shouldn't have been awarded a run for the tag up? Once it was determined the call on the field was incorrect do you have a dead ball?

It would have been tremendously unfair to the Cubs as he was going to score on the tag up, and definitely was going to score after he dropped it, but it seems like you could argue that the rest of the play was impacted by the incorrect call.

Once the umpires change the call to a catch, they have the discretion to place runners. They judged, correctly, that Shaw would have scored on the tag up and that the other runners would not have advanced.

I have no idea if the umps got the call “right “ but what they did was the proper outcome to correct a blown initial call.

I do know if they had ruled it a non catch no more than the out at third on the force would be called. A dead runner is part of the field of play just like an umpire unless they deemed Ballestareos had intentionally stepped in front of the throw to second.

Listening to Sean and whoever the guy is from Chicago co-hosting with him on KXNO today the 2 of them think all the Cubs need is a closer and another bullpen arm. Not going to disagree with the closer take but they definitely need at least 1 good starter for the rotation for the stretch run. Right now the rotation is what scares me the most. Shota has to stay healthy, Tailon is a good starter but he's no more than a 3rd or 4th guy in a good rotation. Boyd has been good but he hasn't pitched over 100 innings since 2019 so have to wonder if fatigue may set in later in the season as long as he stays healthy. Rea has been better than expected but he's a backend of the rotation arm, this is Horton's 1st shot in the big league so not enough sample size yet to know if he can stick in the rotation, Brown looks like he needs to be sent down to work on a 3rd pitch or at the very least work out of the bullpen, and Assad will have to prove he is over his oblique injury before he possibly gets a shot in the rotation. Just a lot of risk and question marks and injury history to think the rotation will be fine without acquiring another guy. Bullpen is kind of sorting itself out lately but would not be against bringing in 2 proven high leverage guys either.

Shaw has played well since being called back up that 3B probably is no longer a need so I doubt a position player will be on the shopping list unless there is an unexpected injury they can't fill with an internal option. The closer options they brought up were Munoz from Seattle although its not a given that Seattle will be sellers and Kenley Jansen and I can't remember who the 3rd guy they mentioned.

I’d rather have a starter

Right now I think a starter is a bigger need than another bullpen arm or closer. If the price is right on certain bullpen guys at the deadline adding more pitching in any form is not a bad thing but to me the rotation is 1 more injury away from being a mess IMO.

I wouldn’t turn down another bullpen piece but the bullpen has been fairly solid for awhile now and I saw some tweet (maybe here I don’t remember) that the I-Cubs pen has been lights out. Another starter is a must though. Still so bummed Steele is out

Usually there are solid bullpen guys available just before the deadline that are salary dumps. If we are going to spend prospect capital I hope it’s on a starter

If you want truly impactful bullpen arms, prospect capital is going to be burnt. But I agree that you can find solid guys for relatively low cost. End of the day this roster needs a starter and probably a costly one (in terms of prospect capital) and at least two dependable, not necessarily elite, bullpen arms.

What the heck has happened with Dansby's fielding metrics? Going to be a long contract if this doesn't improve.
